Amen I say to you... |
 |
 |
When we say the words in prayer do we really understand what they mean? Why do we end most prayers with Amen? Why do preachers holler AMEN to the congregation (stereotypically at least)? I looked it up and got plenty of different definitions. All having roots to Judaism and Hebrew. Most say that it means either “So Be it” “Truly” “It is so” or “I agree.” I grew up thinking that it just meant “the end.” Something to say at the end of a prayer. I was later told it meant to “say that again” or “repeat,” so when you end a prayer with Amen, it is like saying it twice. One says that it could be an acronym for the three Hebrew words: "Aiy'l Melech Ne-eman" which mean that God is a true and faithful king. When Jesus would preach he often started a story or parable with “Amen I say to you.” In this form, it would be like saying either “Again I say to you” or “Truly, I say to you.” Me personally, I would have been saying “Again…” Jesus did a lot of teaching where people would ask the same questions. I would get frustrated after some of this and say “Look, Again, this is how it is…”
It is also used in the bible as an affirmation or agreement. In Deuteronomy you will see the phrase “And all the people shall answer and say, Amen.” So when you pray and end it with Amen, or preach and then say Amen, or say Amen to the Preacher it is like saying I agree.
This makes me think of all the things that I say Amen to. When I end a prayer with amen, I am agreeing or confirming what I just said. The Our Father or The Lords Prayer, I must agree with everything said in that prayer. When I go to church and the pastor says something and I shout out Amen!, I just agreed with what he said.
Amen, I say to you, go forth and do great works. Spread the word of the Lord!
