Culture War at Miss USA Pageant |
 |
 |
Prayer-Soldier writes "The Miss USA Pageant was once about beauty and poise, but now it has become the center of a culture war. ;; The night was brought into the center of controversy when Perez Hilton asked Miss California, "Vermont recently became the fourth state to legalize same-sex marriage. Do you think every state should follow suit. Why or why not?" ;; When Miss California stated that she believed marriage should be between a man and a women, a politically fire storm was set ablaze, some critical of her answer and others praising her courage for sticking to her beliefs.
Kristen Dalton, who was crowned Miss USA, eventually gave the politically correct answer that Miss California failed to give. ;; Could Miss Dalton have done otherwise given the controversy that followed Carrie Prejean's answer? ;; When Miss Dalton was asked on the “Today Show” how she would have answered the gay marriage question posed to Miss California, Miss Dalton replied, "The beautiful thing about America is that we have the right to choose, we have the right to choose what partner we want to love, commit and spend the rest of our lives with. I think all couples should be able to be recognized legally, and they should be able to enter into a union. Whether or not that should be defined as marriage ... I'll leave that up to the politicians."
Her answer was nearly word for word the answer that Perez Hilton said Miss California should have given when he posted his video blog shortly after the Miss USA Pageant. ;; Perhaps this is Kristen's true belief, but one must wonder at the similarity to the answer Perez Hilton said he expected. ;;
The event certainly called into question as to whether Miss USA contestants are being judged for their beliefs or their political correctness. ;; Of course, Miss USA must be viewed as congenial and that certainly appeared to be the attempt of Miss California when she completed her answer stating that she didn't mean to offend anyone, but she demonstrated considerable courage in stating her beliefs knowing the situation in which she was placed.
On the “Today Show,” Carrie Prejean said, "I knew at that moment after I answered the question, I knew, I was not going to win because of my answer, because I had spoken from my heart, from my beliefs and for my God. ;; I wouldn't have answered it differently.”
In an interview by “Fox News” reporter Courtney Friel, Miss Prejean stated, "This happened for a reason. ;; By having to answer that question in front of a national audience, God was testing my character and faith. ;; I'm glad I stayed true to myself." ;;
Miss Prejean was a favorite to win the crown, but this story became a modern day example of the scripture found in the Gospel of Mark:
“What profit is there for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? ;; What could one give in exchange for his life? ;; Whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this faithless and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy angels.” ;; Mark 8:36-38"
