Oberman Rant Over Miss California Decision |

Prayer-Soldier writes "On 12 May 09, Keith Oberman aired a rant over Donald Trump's decision to allow Carrie Prejean to keep her Miss California crown. The controversy started when Prejean responded to a question asked by Perez Hilton, during the Miss USA Pageant, that she believed marriage to be between a man and a women. The response lead to a video blog response from Hilton that directed vulgarities at Prejean.
Oberman emotionally expressed that, “This is no longer about her opinion, its about her. It's about the amazing, holier-than-though-know-it-all-ism that she has exuded from the moment the question was asked, right through every complaint about how she was being unfairly paraded on the public stage as the evil doers foisted news conference after news conference on to her and the anti-gay marriage group she joined and as the evil left-wing media forced her to do interview after interview with the likes of Dr. James Dobson.”
After playing an excerpt of the interview with Dobson where Prejean spoke of how she felt Satan was tempting her and God was asking her to stand up for him, Oberman angrily continued, “God and Satan, battling it out for the future of the freedom of speech inside the head of St. Carrie of La Hoya.” Oberman continued to derisively refer to Prejean as St. Carrie as he asked a series of questions about where was God and Satan in relation to various revealing photos of Prejean that have surfaced.
Oberman's questions and observations were followed by another excerpt of Prejean's comments made at the press conference with Trump, where she stated, “On April 19th, on that stage, I exercised my freedom of speech and I was punished for doing so.” Prejean emotionally added, “This should not happen in America. It undermines the Constitutional rights my grandfather fought for.”
Oberman proceeded to lecture Prejean that, “You were not exercising your freedom of speech during the Miss USA Pageant; your freedom of speech, my freedom of speech, has nothing to do with something to do as crassly commercial as a beauty pageant or as crassly commercial as Donald Trump. On April 19th, you were an employee of USA Inc., of Donald Trump Inc. Unless you have a written contract guaranteeing you cart blanche, and nobody does, the pageant people also have the right to take that right away from you at any moment.”
Oberman punctuated his point by reading the first amendment, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or of the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.” Oberman continued, “I'm sorry, your grandfather did not fight to protect your right to answer a question during a network soft porn special without consequences or fallout...He fought to protect you from having the government stop us from speaking our minds.”
Oberman entitled the segment using a three letter acronym that includes a vulgarity. It was the same three letter acronym that Hilton used on his web site to express his dismay at the Trump announcement without addressing Prejean's contract violations.
This is not the first time Oberman vented over Miss California. On 30 Apr 09, he disparaged Prejean in a segment with Michael Musto where he started the conversation with, “There it is here, Miss California is opposed to same sex marriage, which is at least marriage between two human beings, but she has fully endorsed now marriage between a man and a woman who is partially made out of plastic.”
Musto responded to Oberman with, “She is dumb and twisted. She is sort of like a human Clause Barbie doll.” This caused Fox New's Laura Ingraham to air a segment asking where were the feminist organizations in commenting about the manner of comments being directed against Prejean.
In further fallout of the controversy, Fox News reported on 13 May 09 that Shanna Moakler, co-Director of the Miss California pageant, resigned her position. Moakler is also a former Miss USA and was the December 2001 Playboy Playmate. In stating her reasons, she said, “I cannot with a clear conscious move forward supporting and promoting the Miss Universe Organization when I no longer believe in it...” Moakler's action was in contrast to Trump's comments the day prior indicating that the relationship between Prejean and the state pageant directors was a matter of miscommunication that was cleared up in his office.
Moakler had commented to “People” magazine on 12 May 09 that the meeting had allowed them to clear the air. She told “People,” “We were able to sit down and communicate and vent our frustrations. I am confident that she will stay true to the contract. I'm looking forward to returning to L.A. and starting fresh." On 13 May 09, Moakler told “People,” “This was a very sad decision for me. I stayed up all night trying to make the right decision.”
As the events unfolded after the infamous 19 Apr 09 question, it was widely reported that Moakler was critical of Prejean's comments and actions which the Miss California Pageant co-directors were hijacking the work of the organization.
USMagazine.com reported on 13 May 09 that shortly after the announcement that the National Organization for Marriage would include Prejean in a “No Offense” Religious Liberty add campaign, Moakler announced her appearance in an ad criticizing Proposition 8, the California initiative preventing gay marriage in the state.
The question and answer that continues to swirl in the news probably would not have generated much attention had it not been for the disparaging comments posted by Perez Hilton on his web site shortly after the pageant. The tone of the attack against Prejean generated a media storm that attempted to portray Prejean as hypocritical, however, the viciousness of critics has, turned her into a media martyr."
