“As we remember the selfless service of our fallen heroes, we pray for God's grace upon them,” said President Obama in his first Memorial Day Proclamation, “A Prayer for Peace.”
From a transcript posted on About.com, President Obama declared, “In respect for their dedication and service to America, the Congress, by a joint resolution approved on May 11, 1950, as amended (36 U.S.C. 116), has requested the President to issue a proclamation calling on the people of the United States to observe each Memorial Day as a day of prayer for permanent peace and designating a period on that day when the people of the United States might unite in prayer. The Congress, by Public Law 106-579, has also designated 3:00 p.m. local time on that day as a time for all Americans to observe, in their own way, the National Moment of Remembrance.
“NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim Memorial Day, May 25, 2009, as a day of prayer for permanent peace, and I designate the hour beginning in each locality at 11:00 a.m. of that day as a time to unite in prayer. “I also ask all Americans to observe the National Moment of Remembrance beginning at 3:00 p.m. local time on Memorial Day. I urge the press, radio, television, websites, and all other media to participate in these observances.
After being rained out on 24 May 09, the Coca Cola 600, NASCAR's longest speed race, was moved to 25 May 09. In recognition of the National Moment of Remembrance, NASCAR brought the cars to a stop in front of the grand stands and had the drivers stop their engines for a moment of silence. An in car camera displayed Tony Stewart as he held a small American Flag outside the window of his car. The American Flags at Lowe's Motor Speedway were brought to half mast and prayers were said as the crowd stood.
As the moment of remembrance concluded and the drivers restarted their cars, one driver could be heard over the radio say, “That was a pretty cool site there.” Darrel Waltrip, a Fox Sports announcer, opined that there was a reason the race got rained out and delayed until Memorial Day. Carl Edwards commented the moment gave him chills seeing the moment in front of all the crowd. He noted, that is part of what this day is all about.
NASCAR's action joined with many other major events across the country in a moment of respect and national unity for the sacrifices made over the years by those who have defended our country. The moment was established by Congress through the National Moment of Remembrance signed into law on 28 December 2000.
