Commentary: After watching a couple of hours of cable news and reading the newspaper, I thought, I need some good news. I wanted to find a, somebody-did-something-good-for-someone-else story. I surfed for awhile, but I surfed the wrong places. I saw stories about the economy, government, wars, murder, abortion and political sniping – all depressing stuff.
Then I thought, dummy me, what do I always do when I'm looking for information? I Googled it, I Yahooed it, I Ask.commed it. Google returned 74,000,000 hits on good news in .31 seconds. Yahoo returned 238,000,000 hits in .42 seconds. When I asked Ask.com, “Where can I find good news?” I received 307,440,000 hits, although they didn't tell me how long it took, it was still really fast.
I felt some excitement to find all this good news. Of course, curiosity got the better of me. Given I found all this good news, I wondered how it compared to the bad news. Google returned 57,800,000 hits in .25 seconds. Yahoo returned 98,500,000 hits in .31 seconds. When I asked Ask.com, “Where can I find bad news?” I received 85,400,000 hits, although they didn't tell me how long it took, it was still really fast.
Well, this was pretty encouraging. There seems to be a lot more good news than bad news. The good/bad news ratio on Google was 1.35, the good/bad news ratio on Yahoo was 2.5 and the good/bad news ratio on Ask.com was 3.6. That yields an average good/bad news ratio of 2.48. Now I don't have anything to compare the ratio to, like a daily good/bad news ratio index. That would take some dedication to take the search engine pulse every day for the good/bad news ratio, but it would be interesting to track. Think for a moment, in the morning, we check the weather, the stock futures, the pollen index; but wouldn't it be neat to have a good news index? Well, as long as the ratio remains in the positive range of good news over bad, that would set my day off to a good start.
I decided to take a look at what some of the bad news was. It was mostly stuff like crimes, terrorism, rock bands, newspapers and banks; well, at least on the first pages. I'm sure there is lots more if I wanted to slog through all 98,500,000 hits or so. The good news included a man and a woman married for 80 years (it would be good news if I just live 80 years), grade schoolers donating pennies to a homeless man, forests (because they help clean the air), and the kindness of strangers.
I must point out, there was one good news story that seemed to be more popular than all the others. There were lists and lists of the good news of God. After all the bad news and all the good news, it was comforting to learn that God rules the good news and that there is much more good news than bad.
Although I would like to see it, I really don't have the time to keep a good news index, but I pray that tomorrow, I'll find the same thing. I think that the real story is that if we trust in the Lord, the good news will always be there.
