On 7 Jul 09, the “New York Times” posted an interview with Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. During the interview, in response to a question about the prohibition of the use of Medicaid fund to pay for abortions for poor women, Ginsburg responded, “Frankly I had thought that at the time Roe was decided, there was concern about population growth and particularly growth in populations that we don’t want to have too many of. So that Roe was going to be then set up for Medicaid funding for abortion.”
The words, “...particularly growth in populations that we don't want to have too many of,” should have set of bells and whistles for the reporter conducting the interview, but surprisingly, there was no follow-up question like, “Which populations?” or "Are you saying abortion should be used for population control of certain segments of the population?"
Why the comment didn't seem to raise an eyebrow is not clear, but many conservatives noted a similarity to the views of Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood. In her book, The Pivot of Civilization, Sanger wrote, “We are paying for and even submitting to the dictates of an ever-increasing, unceasingly spawning class of human beings who never should have been born at all." Sanger's objective was to rid society of undesirables through birth control and sterilization. Despite her racist views and promotion of birth control to stop reproduction of those she considered a burden to society, Sanger was in opposition to abortion.
In her autobiography, Sanger wrote, “To each group we explained what contraception was; that abortion was the wrong way--no matter how early it was performed it was taking life; that contraception was the better way, the safer way--it took a little time, a little trouble, but was well worth while in the long run, because life had not yet begun." Still, the organization she founded became the leading provider of abortions in the nation.
Were Ginsburg's comments a reference to Sanger's sentiments? Her reference to Roe being set up for Medicaid funding for abortion appears consistent with Planned Parenthood's ongoing objectives. According to a 6 Mar 09 Lifenews.com report, Planned Parenthood promoted abortion at a White House-sponsored health care summit. The report related that the President of Planned Parenthood, Cecile Richards, encouraged that abortion access be included in the health care reform programs sought by President Barack Obama.
MediaMatters.org put a different spin upon Ginsburg's comments. On 13 Jul 09, MediaMatters.org posted a report critical of Glenn Beck and Conservatives for distorting Ginsburg's comments. The report related, 'conservative media have distorted Ginsburg's comments on abortion to claim that she, in the words of Fox News and radio host Glenn Beck, 'thought Roe v. Wade was a way to weed out undesirables.' In fact, in the interview, Ginsburg was attributing that sentiment to others.”
If that was Ginsburg's intent, it was not clear from the transcript of the interview. The reporter had an opportunity to clarify with a follow-up question, but didn't. Whatever the intent, the response should be cause for concern. In the same interview, Ginsburg's said, “Reproductive choice has to be straightened out. There will never be a woman of means without choice anymore. That just seems to me so obvious. The states that had changed their abortion laws before Roe [to make abortion legal] are not going to change back. So we have a policy that affects only poor women, and it can never be otherwise, and I don't know why this hasn't been said more often.” The clear desire is to use taxpayer funds to provide abortions, but for what purpose?
