Dornan Amendment Change to Allow Local Funds for Abortion |
 |
 |
Prayer-Soldier writes "A 9 Dec 09 FOX News report related that Congressional negotiators have come to an agreement on a $1.1 trillion dollar spending bill that would include changes to the Dornan Amendment that currently prohibits taxpayer funding of abortion within Washington, DC. The report related that the bill would change the Dornan Amendment to add the word “federal” to the current abortion prohibition such that the language of the amendment would no longer prohibit the use of local taxpayer funds for abortions.
According to a 9 Dec 09 AP report posted by MSNBC, “The bill reflects Democrats' control of Congress and the White House” in that the bill would allow Washington DC government to use local taxpayer money to fund abortion.
In a 1 Jul 09 Townhall.com report, President Obama was identified as directly responsible for the change. The report related that “wording in the “Dornan Amendment” was altered to read: “None of the [Federal] funds appropriated under this Act shall be expended for any abortion except where the life of the mother would be endangered if the fetus were carried to term or where the pregnancy is the result of an act of rape or incest.”
A 24 Jun 09 CBN.com report related that a group of pro-life women in the House of Representatives protested the Obama administration's effort to change the pro-life amendment. The report commented that the House Pro-Life Women's Caucus pointed out that with President Obama's actions were hypocrital in the face of his statements that he sought to reduce the number of abortions. The report quoted Marjorie Dannenfelser of the Susan B. Anthony List as saying, “What would DC funding of abortions do? What would taxpayer funding do? It would increase abortions in the District of Columbia by at least 1,000 abortions per year. Now this is not a strategy for reducing abortion because common sense tells us that if you fund something you're going to get more of it.”
Through the power of a single word, the tables are suddenly turned against children conceived, but not yet born. According to a 2006 National Abortion Federation summary of Guttmacher Institute statistics, “20-35% of Medicaid-eligible women who would choose abortion carry their pregnancies to term when public funds are not available.” With the stroke of a pen, lives that could have been lived may now be lost.
