The Treasure Within the Heart

Scripture:

For that night was known before by our fathers, that assuredly knowing what oaths they had trusted to, they might be of better courage. So your people received the salvation of the just, and destruction of the unjust. For as you did punish the adversaries: so you did also encourage and glorify us. For the just children of good men were offering sacrifice secretly, and they unanimously ordered a law of justice: that the just should receive both good and evil alike, singing now the praises of the fathers. (Wisdom 18:6-9)

Now, faith is the substance of things to be hoped for, the evidence of things that appear not. For by this the ancients obtained a testimony.

By faith he that is called Abraham obeyed to go out into a place which he was to receive for an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing whither he went. By faith he abode in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in cottages, with Isaac and Jacob, the co-heirs of the same promise. For he looked for a city that has foundations: whose builder and maker is God. By faith also Sara herself, being barren, received strength to conceive seed, even past the time of age: because she believed that he was faithful who had promised, For which cause there sprung even from one (and him as good as dead) as the stars of heaven in multitude and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable. All these died according to faith, not having received the promises but beholding them afar off and saluting them and confessing that they are pilgrims and strangers on the earth. For they that say these things do signify that they seek a country. And truly, if they had been mindful of that from whence they came out, they had doubtless, time to return. But now they desire a better, that is to say, a heavenly country. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he has prepared for them a city. By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, (To whom it was said: In Isaac shall your seed be called:) Accounting that God is able to raise up even from the dead. Whereupon also he received him for a parable.
(Hebrews 11:8-19)

Fear not, little flock, for it has pleased your Father to give you a kingdom. Sell what you possess and give alms. Make to yourselves bags which grow not old, a treasure in heaven which fails not: where no thief approaches, nor moth corrupts. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Let your loins be girt and lamps burning in your hands. And you yourselves like to men who wait for their lord, when he shall return from the wedding; that when he comes and knocks, they may open to him immediately. Blessed are those servants whom the Lord, when he comes, shall find watching. Amen I say to you that he will gird himself and make them sit down to meat and passing will minister unto them. And if he shall come in the second watch or come in the third watch and find them so, blessed are those servants. But this know you, that if the householder did know at what hour the thief would come, he would surely watch and would not suffer his house to be broken open. Be you then also ready: for at what hour you think not the Son of man will come.

And Peter said to him: Lord, do you speak this parable to us, or likewise to all? And the Lord said: Who thinks you is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord sets over his family, to give them their measure of wheat in due season? Blessed is that servant whom, when his lord shall come, he shall find so doing. Verily I say to you, he will set him over all that he possesses. But if that servant shall say in his heart: My Lord is long a coming; and shall begin to strike the men-servants and maid-servants, and to eat and to drink and be drunk: The lord of that servant will come in the day that he hopes not, and at the hour that he knows not: and shall separate him and shall appoint him his portion with unbelievers. And that servant, who knew the will of his lord and prepared not himself and did not according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. But he that knew not and did things worthy of stripes shall be beaten with few stripes. And unto whomsoever much is given, of him much shall be required: and to whom they have committed much, of him they will demand the more.
( Luke 12:32-48 )

Reflection:

We all face times of uncertainty. We all face times of doubt. We all face times of challenge, trial and tribulation. We witness afflictions. We witness poverty. We witness corruption. We witness violence. We witness people rising against people and nations rising against nations. We witness loss of life. In these moments, we are tempted to wonder as to the purpose for what has happened, what is happening and what is to happen. We often struggle to understand, for we do not see as God sees; therefore, we do not always comprehend what He allows in this time so that a greater good may come.

We are often blind in the moment. We are stunned by tragedy and those who are hurt. We grieve, we are frustrated, we are tempted to strike out. In such times, we often fail to pray through which we might learn as to what God seeks from us. If we listen to Him, He will guide us so that our blindness may be removed and we may see how we may contribute to the glory of His plan.

If we pray to Him and listen within our hearts for where He seeks to guide us, we need not worry as to our trials within this world, for through our faith in Him, He will lead us through our tribulations and prepare us for the eternal days within His kingdom.

We do not see the future, therefore, at times, we are apprehensive of what is to come. There are times He asks us to step forward in faith. We do not always know in such moments to where He seeks to lead us, but we must trust that no matter the challenge or the trial, He seeks to bring us to a greater good. We must also recognize that He does not place us here so we may simply sit and wait for what comes, rather, He created us so we may do our part within His plan. It is always the choice before us, that we can do as we desire, or we can do as He asks of us. If we are in doubt as to what purpose to which He calls us, we must remember He sent us the Holy Spirit to remind us of all His Son taught and to guide us in all which is truth. (John 14:26, 1 John 5:6)

The faithful are blessed, for they receive of what others still await to hear. They know what God has given and what He offers. They know through His Word, there is a better way for the world and a better time to come; but the faithful cannot be complacent. In prayer, we must inquire as to what tasks we are called. Some will hear the call to minister to the afflicted while others will hear the call to share of His Word. Some will hear the call to raise children while others will hear the call to tend to His flock.

Blessed are the faithful, for He entrusts to them the task of caring for those who are lost, for those who are afflicted, for those who suffer, for those who are hungry, for those who are thirsty, for those who seek the truth, and for those who need hope. As those who believe in Him go forth to care for the the children of His creation, they care also for Him. (Matthew 25:31-46) It is in these moments that the faithful demonstrate their understanding of His greatest commandments. ( Matthew 22:36-40, Mark 12:28-34, Luke 10:25-28 ) It is in these moments that they do what He entrusts to them so His plan may be fulfilled.

We are told, we do not know the time or the hour He will call us home (Matthew 25:13, Luke 12:46); therefore, we must strive to make use of the time we are allowed. Each moment may be the last we have in this world to care, to hope, or to love. Let us, then, not waste our moments in pursuits of the ways of the evil one. Instead, let us offer ourselves in prayer and listen for the tasks He has for us. Let us listen within our hearts, then, move forward in faith that with God by our side, we may accomplish what we would otherwise not be able to do alone. Let us, then, pick up our cross (Luke 9:23) so that in so doing, we may testify to our hope through Him. (1 Peter 3:14-16) Let us also pray for the day where all will see His glory and all the children of His creation will flock to Him and rejoice in His grace, mercy and love. (Isaiah 25:8-9)

May the peace and blessings of the Lord be with you always,
Prayer Soldier
