Where is the One Born King of the Jews?

Scripture:

Arise, be enlightened, O Jerusalem: for your light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon you. For behold darkness shall cover the earth, and a mist the people: but the Lord shall arise upon you, and his glory shall be seen upon you. And the Gentiles shall walk in your light, and kings in the brightness of your rising. Lift up your eyes round about, and see: all these are gathered together, they are come to you: your sons shall come from afar, and your daughters shall rise up at your side. Then shall you see, and abound, and your heart shall wonder and be enlarged, when the multitude of the sea shall be converted to you, the strength of the Gentiles shall come to you. The multitude of camels shall cover you, the dromedaries of Madian and Epha: all they from Saba shall come, bringing gold and frankincense: and showing forth praise to the Lord. (Isaiah 60:1-6)

If yet you have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me towards you: How that, according to revelation, the mystery has been made known to me. Which in other generations was not known to the sons of men, as it is now revealed to his holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit: That the Gentiles should be fellow heirs and of the same body: and co-partners of his promise in Christ Jesus, by the gospel. (Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6)

When Jesus therefore was born in Bethlehem of Juda, in the days of king Herod, behold, there came wise men from the East to Jerusalem, saying: Where is he that is born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and are come to adore him. And king Herod hearing this, was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And assembling together all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, he inquired of them where Christ should be born. But they said to him: In Bethlehem of Juda. For so it is written by the prophet: And you Bethlehem the land of Juda are not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of you shall come forth the captain that shall rule my people Israel.

Then Herod, privately calling the wise men learned diligently of them the time of the star which appeared to them; and sending them into Bethlehem, said: Go and diligently inquire after the child, and when you have found him, bring me word again, that I also may come and adore him. Who having heard the king, went their way; and behold the star which they had seen in the East, went before them, until it came and stood over where the child was. And seeing the star they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And entering into the house, they found the child with Mary his mother, and falling down they adored him: and opening their treasures, they offered him gifts; gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having received an answer in sleep that they should not return to Herod, they went back another way into their country.
(Matthew 2:1-12)

Reflection:

We all should ask, where is God within our lives? What is His meaning to us? We also might ask, how does He work to lead us so we might share in the blessings He offers? Some will answer they have no belief in One who does not reveal Himself to our eyes, but do we disbelieve in all which we do not seek? If we do not look for Him, how do we expect to find Him? If we keep our hearts closed, how do we expect for Him to enter?

Should we take the time to look, we shall find He walks with us and seeks to lead us away from the many ways we do harm to ourselves and others. For a time He sent His angels and His prophets, but then, He sent His only begotten Son and the Holy Spirit to guide us to all we might receive through love of our Creator and one another. As we find Him, we will also find His blessings. If we study the meaning of His commandments, we will find He does not seek to enslave us, but to free us to share the meaning and truth of His Word and this truth is love. ( Leviticus 19:18, Leviticus 19:34, Matthew 22:36-40, 1 John 2:1-11, 1 John 3:10-18 ) As we find and live by this truth, we set aside the ways of misery and strife and share with one another the blessings which God has always intended for us.

We cannot find the One who created us if we do not search for Him, nor can we see where He seeks to lead us if we do not first seek Him. Rather than denying the existence of the One who created us, we should ask where we might find Him. We may begin by examining our lives. We may not understand all which happens to us in the moment, but if we look back, sometimes across many years, we may begin to see where His hand guided us. We may see the blessings we received through His providence. We may also see the blessings we turned away as we ignored or turned away from Him. Let us, then, not walk in ignorance, but seek His desire for us and the blessings of His ways. Let us not sow divisions between ourselves and Him, or among ourselves, but take to heart His desire that we love Him and one another.

For generations, God provided for the children of His creation. Some would feel His presence, many would receive blessings as they turned to Him, but too many turn to the darkness and all the strife and misery which it brings. And so it was, the day came where through His love for the children of His creation, God decided to send His only begotten Son so the people would have a true king, One who could not be corrupted by the ways of the world or the evil one.

Magi from the east saw the rising of His star. They followed it to find who it was to whom it pointed. It was the light of a star which would lead them to the Light of the world. As they arrived in Jerusalem, they asked where they might find the newborn King to which the star led them. They came bearing gifts to do Him homage.

As they found Him, they rejoiced and adored the child of the Virgin Mary, the only begotten Son of God. They offered Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh; but not all would seek to adore the child born for their salvation, for they preferred the darkness and sought to destroy the Light. Blessed are those who seek the Light, for no one can see the blessings of truth while shrouded within the dark.

And so, the magi found the One whom God made the King of kings, the Lord of lords, our savior and redeemer. (1 Timothy 6:13-16) They found to where the star led them, but did they fully comprehend the child before them? A relationship cannot be made from one visit alone, but blessed are we that He walks with us every day. The question for us is will we see His light? Will we seek where it might lead us? Will we seek to find Him, not for a moment of homage, but for an eternity of blessings? Will we allow Him to lead us to His kingdom where love is shared by all, where there is no pain or affliction and where evil is not allowed to follow?

Questions for further reflection:

Where might we find the Light of the world?

What is the promise we may find within the Light?

How may we share the blessings of this promise?

May the peace and blessings of the Lord be with you always,
Prayer Soldier
