I have heard a lot about homeschooling, and have wanted to learn more about it. People have told me it is great and wonderful and how good it is for the whole family. But, what about the legal issues? I feel this is something I want to do for my children, but I don’t want to get in trouble or anything. Can I homeschool and not get in trouble?

To answer your question “Is Homeschooling Legal?”, Yes it is. Homeschooling is legal in all 50 states. Some even encourage it with financial aid, books even computers for the children to learn with. Of course, regulations and guidelines vary from state to state, and can even change depending on school district. Homeschool Support groups are a great source of information. They can be found online or at the library. We also suggest obtaining and reading anything pertaining to the legality of homeschooling in your location just to be on the safe side. Your local librarian is another good resource for homeschooling information. The librarian will be able to assist you in finding and many times provide you with the information you need. Besides the initial information, it can be a good idea to make friends with you local librarian for future reference… Depending on your location, you may find the school officials helpful; in other places they may view you as “the competition,” and therefore either not help or even mislead you. So be sure you know the law and if possible their views on homeschooling before consulting with the local school officials.

“Can I homeschool and not get in trouble?”

Yes, most definitely! It is not very hard to keep the required records, just make sure you know what to do to stay legal. The National Household Education Surveys Program (NHES) did a survey in 2003 that shows that approximately 1,096,000 students were being homeschooled. This was up 29% from 1999. If over 1 million others out there can do so can you.

I agree, homeschooling is the greatest gift you can give to your child. I remember the first time I heard about homeschooling I thought it was weird and wondered how they could do such a thing. Now that I have been homeschooled and am actively homeschooling children in my family, I believe it is the only way to go. I hop this helps, Good luck to you and please come back and let us know how it goes.
