The Direction of Our Path

Scripture:

And the princes said to the king. We beseech you that this man may be put to death: for on purpose he weakens the hands of the men of war, that remain in this city, and the hands of the people, speaking to them according to these words: for this man seeks not peace to this people, but evil. And king Sedecias said: Behold he is in your hands: for it is not lawful for the king to deny you any thing. Then they took Jeremias and cast him into the dungeon of Melchias the son of Amelech, which was in the entry of the prison: and they let down Jeremias by ropes into the dungeon, wherein there was no water, but mire. And Jeremias sunk into the mire.

And Abdemelech went out of the king?s house, and spoke to the king, saying: My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done against Jeremias the prophet, casting him into the dungeon to die there with hunger, for there is no more bread in the city. Then the king commanded Abdemelech the Ethiopian, saying: Take from hence thirty men with thee, and draw up Jeremias the prophet out of the dungeon, before he die.
(Jeremiah 38:4-6, 8-10)

And therefore we also having so great a cloud of witnesses over our head, laying aside every weight and sin which surrounds us, let us run by patience to the fight proposed to us: Looking on Jesus, the author and finisher of faith, who, having joy set before him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and now sits on the right hand of the throne of God. For think diligently upon him that endured such opposition from sinners against himself that you be not wearied, fainting in your minds. For you have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin. (Hebrews 12:1-4)

I am come to cast fire on the earth. And what will I, but that it be kindled? And I have a baptism wherewith I am to be baptized. And how am I straitened until it be accomplished? Think you, that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, no; but separation. For there shall be from henceforth five in one house divided: three against two, and two against three. The father shall be divided against the son and the son against his father: the mother against the daughter and the daughter against her mother: the mother-in-law against the daughter-in-law and the daughter-in-law law against her mother-in-law. (Luke 12:49-53)

Reflection:

Truth is sometimes difficult to hear. When faced with the Word of God, many are tempted to twist it to their purpose or agenda, but in so doing, they distort or deny the will of the Heavenly Father. Their lack of trust separates them from God and God leaves them to the consequences of their choices. We cannot see the future, and our temptation is to pursue solutions by our understanding of the world, but instead, we should seek in prayer to receive the guidance of God.

We each have desires as to outcomes of events in motion, but we must trust to where God seeks to guide us. Though king Sedecias saved Jeremias from death, the king failed to listen to the warnings of the prophet. Jeremias told the king, ?Thus says the Lord of hosts the God of Israel: If you will take a resolution and go out to the princes of the king of Babylon, your soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire: and you shall be safe, and your house. But if you will not go out to the princes of the king of Babylon, this city shall be delivered into the hands of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire: and you shall not escape out of their hands. And king Sedecias said to Jeremias: I am afraid because of the Jews that are fled over to the Chaldeans: lest I should be delivered into their hands, and they should abuse me. But Jeremias answered: They shall not deliver you: hearken, I beseech you, to the word of the Lord, which I speak to you, and it shall be well with you, and your soul shall live. ? ( Jeremiah 38:17-18 ) King Sedecias had different designs; therefore, he did not heed the warnings or advice of the prophet of the Lord. Because of the decision of the king, Jerusalem fell, the sons of the king were killed, the people who survived were enslaved, and the king himself was captured and tortured by the Chaldeans. (Jeremiah 39:1-9)

It is not wrong to dream of what might be or to ask God for assistance to do what is right and just, but we must also listen to where the Lord seeks to lead us. He gives us His scripture and speaks to us through His angels, His prophets, His only begotten Son and the Holy Spirit. If we are in doubt as to where His Word guides us, if we are not certain of its meaning, we should pray to the Holy Spirit who will remind us of all Jesus taught and will guide us in truth. (John 14:26, 1 John 5:6)

As we reflect upon scripture, we see the blessings of God poured out upon the faithful and consequences of evil allowed to fall upon those who choose to turn away from His path. We might be tempted, then, to ask, for what purpose does God allow trials to fall upon good people? Before we take pity of ourselves for our suffering within this world, we must consider the suffering of our Savior. Though the Son of God was distressed in the Garden of Gethsemane, for He knew what was to come, He turned Himself over to the Father so that the will of God might be done. (Matthew 26:42)

The suffering of Jesus was not only from scourging and crucifixion, but also from the sins of the world, which He took upon His shoulders. Whatever our suffering, then, cannot begin to compare with His sacrifice for us; a sacrifice which was made so we may be forgiven of our sins and cleansed of our iniquities so as our robes are washed white in the blood of the Lamb, we may have the opportunity to walk with Him forever and ever within His kingdom where love is shared by all and evil is not allowed to follow. (Revelation 7:14-17)

We might question, how is it that after the sacrifice made for us, so many are not willing to accept all which it means and all which it offers? It is a matter of blindness to His gospel. It is a matter that many do not seek to know Him in prayer and, therefore, do not allow themselves to be guided by His truth.

The truth of God is love, but the world is blinded by selfishness and the deceptions of the evil one. It is for this reason the world is divided, not because of His Word, but that so many within the world do not allow themselves to be guided by all which the Holy Spirit reveals. The desire of God is that not one of His flock should be lost, but many do not wish to accept His Word or what He councils, just as king Sedecias chose his own path over the path to which He was encouraged by God.

Because they are blinded by their own desires and expectations, many do not trust God will look after them. Instead, they become more concerned with how they will be perceived or treated within the world. They turn away from the civility, compassion and charity taught by His Word and turn, instead, to the agendas of selfish and evil hearts.

The world need not be divided as it is, for all are called to unity in Christ. It remains divided because of those who trust in false prophets, false ideologies and the perceived promise of whatever is placed before God. These are all used against us by the evil one to lure us away from our Creator. Many are deceived to serve false religious, political or ideological agendas over His commandments to love Him and one another. (Matthew 22:36-40) Many are deceived to believe there is nobility in ignoble causes.

Jesus came to the world to bring us the truth of the Heavenly Father, but instead, faced persecution by those blinded by the ways of evil. The battle of good and evil rages to this day. As the faithful engage this battle, let us pray God will grant us the wisdom, courage and strength to live by what is right and just. If we are in doubt as to what we are called to do, let us, then, ask the Holy Spirit to guide us so we may share with one another the blessings of His peace, mercy and love.

May the peace and blessings of the Lord be with you always,
Prayer Soldier
