We Do Not Know the Hour

Scripture:

The word that Isaias the son of Amos saw, concerning Juda and Jerusalem. And in the last days the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be prepared on the top of mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills, and all nations shall flow unto it. And many people shall go, and say: Come and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the house of the God of Jacob, and he will teach us his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall come forth from Sion, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. And he shall judge the Gentiles, and rebuke many people: and they shall turn their swords into plowshares, and their spears into sickles: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they be exercised any more to war. O house of Jacob, come, and let us walk in the light of the Lord. (Isaiah 2:1-5)

And that, knowing the season, that it is now the hour for us to rise from sleep. For now our salvation is nearer than when we believed. The night is passed and the day is at hand. Let us, therefore cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day: not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and impurities, not in contention and envy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ: and make not provision for the flesh in its concupiscences. (Romans 13:11-14)

And as in the days of Noe, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For, as in the days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, even till that day in which Noe entered into the ark: and they knew not till the flood came and took them all away: so also shall the coming of the Son of man be. Then two shall be in the field. One shall be taken and one shall be left. Two women shall be grinding at the mill. One shall be taken and one shall be left. Watch therefore, because you know not what hour your Lord will come. But this know, that, if the good man of the house knew at what hour the thief would come, he would certainly watch and would not suffer his house to be broken open. Wherefore be you also ready, because at what hour you know not the Son of man will come. (Matthew 24:37-44)

Reflection:

The desire of God is that we shall learn the blessings we may receive through our love of Him and of one another. The violence and misery of peoples stems from their dark desires; pride, envy, gluttony, lust, wrath, greed, sloth. So that we might avoid the consequences of such behaviors, He calls us to live, instead, by the virtues of humility, kindness, temperance, chastity, patience, charity and diligence. As the people turn to Him and seek to live by the virtues of His commandments, peace shall spread. That which divides the people shall melt away. Love and charity shall bring them together. Blessed will be the day when all shall lift their hearts to the Lord in thanks and praise for the blessings of His Holy Word and the abundance of His grace, mercy and love.

The evil one will seek to seduce us to all which causes the decay and ruination of our soul. We must be wary and vigilant, for the dark one does not always seek to lure us with the obvious wrong, rather, he seeks to confuse us and entice us such that we do not see the end-state of what comes of what we do and fail to do. Through his deceit, we are seduced to believe that what is right is wrong and what is wrong is right. Through his guile, we are tempted to believe it is somehow noble to be silent in matters of faith, but his real objective is that we do not encourage one another in what is right and just.

The work before us is nigh, for we do not know the day or the hour He will come to gather in the faithful so they might join Him forever within His kingdom. Let us then, turn away from all which separates us from our God and prepare our hearts and our souls so that we might receive the blessings of His embrace. Let us turn away from all which afflicts the soul. Let us follow Him to the light and share of the blessings of faith, hope and love.

As we lead our lives, we must avoid the temptation to focus our faith inward without allowing it to appear outward. We cannot encourage one another in silence, nor can we expect others to be encouraged if we do not live as an example of our faith in Him. As we encounter others, we are called not to judge (Matthew 7:1), rather, we are called to spread His light through our civility, compassion, charity and love. (Matthew 25:31-46) In such matters, we must give priority. We must avoid the many excuses by which the evil one will tempt us as reasons to set aside the works of faith (Revelation 3:15-17), rather, we must seek that others will see His light burning within us, not by our pride, but through our humility and the fruits of what we do.

Each day, we must seek to learn from Him, for we cannot live what we do not know. If we are ignorant of the blessings of faith in Him, we leave ourselves vulnerable to the dark one who plots to take it from us. If we do not know the fullness of our faith, we cannot hope to obtain the fullness of all which He promises. We cannot prepare ourselves for His coming by walking in ignorance. As we study and pray for understanding, we must also seek to live what we learn, for knowledge without action has no meaning. (James 2:14-26)

Let us, then, ask in prayer that God will lead us in our understanding and grant us the strength and courage to live as an example of all to which He calls us. As others see the blessings which come from living our faith, so shall He. As we bless others, so shall He bless us. As we share the blessings of faith, we turn away the ravages of evil and help to bring forth peace and happiness within our day.

Let us, then, gather together and rejoice in the good news of His Holy Word. Let us prepare for His coming. Let us not only look to how we may avoid evil, but also seek to bring forth the blessings of all which is good, right and just. Let us join together in love of Him and one another so that blessings, peace and love may be shared by all throughout the world.

Questions for further reflection:

How may we learn the fullness of our faith?

What does it mean to ?put on the armor of light??

Given we do not know the day or the hour of His coming, how best may we remain prepared for it?

May the peace and blessings of the Lord be with you always,
Prayer Soldier
