He Remembers Justice and Injustice

Scripture:

Hear this, you that crush the poor, and make the needy of the land to fail, saying: When will the month be over, and we shall sell our wares: and the sabbath, and we shall open the corn: that we may lessen the measure, and increase the sicle, and may convey in deceitful balances, that we may possess the needy for money, and the poor for a pair of shoes, and may sell the refuse of the corn? The Lord has sworn against the pride of Jacob: surely I will never forget all their works. ( Amos 8:4-7 )

I desire therefore, first of all, that supplications, prayers, intercessions and thanksgivings be made for all men: For kings and for all that are in high station: that we may lead a quiet and a peaceable life in all piety and chastity. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who will have all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God: and one mediator of God and men, the man Christ Jesus: Who gave himself a redemption for all, a testimony in due times. Where unto I am appointed a preacher and an apostle (I say the truth, I lie not), a doctor of the Gentiles in faith and truth. I will therefore that men pray in every place, lifting up pure hands, without anger and contention. ( 1 Timothy 2:1-8 )

And he said also to his disciples: There was a certain rich man who had a steward: and the same was accused unto him, that he had wasted his goods. And he called him, and said to him: How is it that I hear this of you? Give an account of your stewardship: for now you can be steward no longer. And the steward said within himself: What shall I do, because my lord takes away from me the stewardship? To dig I am not able; to beg I am ashamed. I know what I will do, that when I shall be removed from the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.

Therefore calling together every one of his lord' s debtors, he said to the first: How much do you owe my lord? But he said: An hundred barrels of oil. And he said to him: Take your bill and sit down quickly, and write fifty. Then he said to another: And how much do you owe? Who said: A hundred quarters of wheat. He said to him: Take your bill, and write eighty. And the lord commended the unjust steward, for as much as he had done wisely: for the children of this world are wiser in their generation than the children of light. And I say to you: Make unto you friends of the mammon of iniquity; that when you shall fail, they may receive you into everlasting dwellings.

He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in that which is greater: and he that is unjust in that which is little is unjust also in that which is greater. If then you have not been faithful in the unjust mammon, who will trust you with that which is the true? And if you have not been faithful in that which is of another, who will give you that which is your own? No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one and love the other: or he will hold to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.
(Luke 16:1-13)

Reflection:

The prophet Amos raised visibility of the thoughts of those who live by the morals of the world over the values by which God desires us to live. We are called to be fair with one another, but there are many who are blinded by selfishness and greed. We are called to rest and join in the blessings of worship of our God, but there are those who cannot wait to be out of the door of His house to return to the pursuits of the world. We are tempted to cheat one another, but for what gain?

What benefit is there to our soul if we hold in storage great wealth? The day will come where all of our possessions will be taken from us except the love we share from our soul. Love does not grow by hoarding it, it grows only by sharing it. What we give is what we shall also receive.

This is the desire of God, that we live by the blessings of love of Him and one another. This is not shared when we deceive, defraud or steal. This is not shared when we turn away from God. In the moment we may perceive that we prosper from our deceptions, but in the time to come where we must account to Him, we shall see how our efforts to build our holdings within the world only serve to diminish the wealth within our heart. No matter what we justify to ourselves, when we stand before Him, we will finally understand why it is better to concern ourselves with the wealth which shall pass to eternity over the wealth which shall only pass to dust.

We are called to justice, to live together in peace and love, to share in charity and to raise hands in friendship. Jesus came to us to encourage us to His way, the way of love of God and love of one another. (Matthew 22:36-40) He taught this truth and the blessings we might receive by living this truth.

Jesus spoke of the example of the steward who was let go from his position because the steward had squandered what belonged to the master. Looking to what may come of his future, the steward could have sought his commission from the usury he imposed upon the promissory notes held by his master, but instead, he thought it to be more prudent to build good will rather than holding out for a last measure of mammon. The steward observed that good will would pay dividends which cannot be obtained through shady commerce. The master saw and commended the path of goodwill the steward chose. Through this parable, Jesus helps us to see that we all have the opportunity to turn away from questionable values and turn to the blessings of what is right and just.

Jesus warned that we cannot serve two masters. There will come a time where the two shall come in conflict, therefore, we must choose the path of our devotions wisely. To survive within this world, we must nourish and care for our body, but if we are to survive beyond this world, we must nourish our soul. What we seek to store up of this world, within this world, will not serve us for the eternity to come. Jesus advises us, then, to consider first the matters of what brings warmth and light to our soul; the matters of justice, honesty, integrity, charity and love.

If we examine His commandments, they guide us to what is right and just. They guide us that we may share in blessings rather than to be consumed by our temptations. The day will come where He will ask for an accounting of our choices. We must ask ourselves, how will we explain? How will we demonstrate to Him that we truly believe in Him if we turn away from the wisdom of His Word? Let us, then, reflect upon our devotions and concern ourselves first with that which determines our eternity.

May the peace and blessings of the Lord be with you always,
Prayer Soldier
