Disappointment is Relative

In life, we face many disappointments. We may be disappointed if a store does not have a style we desire. We may be disappointed if our team does not win. We may be disappointed if we do not get a job we want, or a promotion, or the grade we expect. We may be disappointed that something costs too much or that some goal or desire is harder to obtain than easier or may be entirely out of our reach.

Disappointment is relative. It leads us to worry of problems in relation to that which we do not achieve. It distracts us from seeing all the blessings we may have and for which we should be thankful. It distracts us from seeing our fortune in the face of those so much less fortunate than ourselves. It distracts us from setting our troubles aside so we may care for others. It distracts us from happiness with what we have and what we may have in relationship with others.

Still, disappointment has a purpose. It leads us to strive harder to achieve our goals and desires. It leads us to try again, perhaps a little harder. But disappointment can lead us to pursue the wrong endeavors.

Do we take the time to consider our goals and desires to do God's will? Do we take the time to consider the strength of our faith? In these moments, do we feel disappointment as we do in relation to our other desires? Does it cause us to try harder to live the faith and increase the strength of our faith? Does it lead us to recognize the importance of our relationship with God above anything in this world? Does it lead us to recognize the need to constantly work on our faith and our relationship with God; for that which is neglected will wither? Does it lead us to perform God's work?

Dear Lord, help me to understand that the disappointments I may feel in this world are passing. Help me to see my fortune beyond those who are less fortunate. Help me to share in Your works to help those who are in more need than I. Help me to understand the works you desire of me, what I may do to further Your will and the time and place that I may serve Your purpose. Dear Lord, help me grow in the light of Your Love.
