For what do we pray? Do we pray for God's will to be done or do we only pray for our own intentions? Do we pray only for the removal of pain and strife, or mere difficulty; or do we pray for salvation? Do we pray for our salvation or do we pray for the salvation of others? Do we pray only for the souls of others or do we pray for the healing of our own soul?
For whatever we pray, God hears. When we pray for our personnel wants, God hears the same as when we pray for the intentions of others.
God hears when we pray in anguish. God hears when we pray, mired in our perceptions of strife. God hears when we pray to remove the pain, strife, and anguish of others.
God hears when we pray with loving intentions, with request to heal. God hears when we pray with thanks and praise. God hears when we ask for His blessings and mercy. God hears all the prayers of our lives.
But when we pray, do we always understand God's answer? If we pray for those afflicted, who may be approaching death; if we pray for their healing, will we understand if the true healing is given for their souls?
When we pray for the afflicted, which is it better to heal, the physical body or the soul? We empathize with the afflicted who feel pain and suffering. We empathize with those who stand at death's door. We empathize and we turn to our God, the one we know that can remove the pain and suffering of the moment. We empathize, but do we understand God's answer when the body is allowed to perish?
Our time here, in this world, in this physical existence is short. In comparison to the eternal, it is less than a blink of an eye. And so, whatever pain and suffering we face here compares in no sense to the pain and suffering of a soul left unhealed. What we face here is inconsequential compared to what we face for the remainder of eternity; but what we do here will determine what we will face past this life.
God hears for all that we pray. God does not ignore this moment of time. God's miracles are granted here, no less than any other time. But if we have a choice to pray for only one thing, for what would we pray?
Of course, we are not limited to the subject of one prayer. Our prayers should be for many reasons. Our prayers should be as much for thanks and praise as they are for our requests.
Lord, as a child I prayed for selfish things and you demonstrated great patience. As I grew, I failed to remember You. As I pray to You now, I pray that You bring me closer to You. I pray that you help me to understand what should be in my prayers and what is contained in Your answers.
Amen.
