Were We Created Only to Suffer?
Did our God create us that we should only suffer, that we should only approach our daily prayers in solemn sadness? Did our Lord create us only that we should deny ourselves all pleasure and moments of mirth? Did God create us that we should always be in despair?
It is the result of our existence that we face trial and tribulation. It is the result of our sin that we suffer, that we feel sadness, that we feel periods of despair. It is our sin that creates these conditions. There is what God has created for us and there is what we have done with that creation.
And because God loved the world so, He sent us His only begotten Son. He knew how we would respond. He knew that even with God in our presence, we could not help but to sin. He knew that even the most righteous would fail the Lord our God.
It is through the realization of our sins that we feel sadness and despair. Should we not cry and wail in sorrow that God was with us, yet, we greeted Him with contrary tongues, that in our insolence, we nailed Him to a cross and rejected Him? Should we not fall to the ground in constant despair that when God tried to walk among us, we rejected Him and thrust a spear in His side? Should we not see that our sin is the cause of our suffering?
He knew what we would do; and for what we did, what we will do, what we failed to do and what we will fail to do; we should bow our heads in shame, in sadness, in despair for our sinful weakness. We should fall to our knees in prayer to ask for His forgiveness, for His grace, for His mercy. We should prostrate ourselves in despair that we are weak and not worthy to receive Him, that we have not kept His word.
But did God create us to forever exist this way? He knew what we would do. He knew that despite our intentions, despite our best efforts, we would sin. He knew and still knows and in His grace and mercy for us, He suffered, died and was buried. Our knowing of that which happened for our sins should be cause of great anguish, wailing and tears. As we have made the Lord suffer, should we not suffer too?
What happened; because of what we did and will do, because of what we have failed to do and will fail to do; did not end with the final breath upon the cross. What happened did not end as He was placed in a tomb and a great stone rolled into place. If that is where it ended for us, then, there would be nothing for us but sorrow, anguish and despair.
Our Great Joy and Hope
But on the third day, He rose in fulfillment of the scriptures. He suffered and died for our sins, but He rose to give us new hope through His resurrection. It is the good news of the Lord that our sins may be forgiven. The good news is that if we continue to seek Him, we may be forgiven. And in this news is cause for great joy. In this news, we know we are not worthy to receive Him, but with His word, we shall be healed.
And so, with the great news that has been proclaimed, we should lift our hearts with great joy and gladness. We should profess our prayers of thanks and praise. We should share with one another the blessings of the news of the salvation we have been given. We should share His Word, and living in His Word, we should find great cause for happiness. By living in His word, we find that true pleasure of living. And in this joy, we must remember what He did for us; and for that which the Lord hath done, in prayer and song we should offer our thanks and praise.
Dear Lord, it is with great sorrow and anguish that I must recognize that it was my sin that has caused and causes You to suffer. It is with great despair that I must realize You died upon the cross for my sin. Through my own faults and my own word, in what I have done and what I have failed to do, I was the cause of Your suffering and death. Through the emptiness of my sins, I am not worthy to receive You, but through Your sacrifice, I have salvation; through your forgiveness, I may be cleansed; through your grace and mercy, I may be healed.
Dear Lord, for Your sacrifice and all You have done for your children, I am thankful. In all Your glory, I offer my thanks and praise.
Dear Mary, Mother of God; pray with me that Your Son may grant our prayers for peace and deliverance from evil. Dear Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death, Amen.
Peace be with you,
Nam Eno
