As we begin the preparations for the celebration of the day our Lord and Savior was born of the Virgin Mary and became man, we prepare to look back at what happened. When the angel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary and informed her, Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus, (Luke 1:31) the events leading to our salvation was set in motion as told by the prophecy from many generations before. Let us reflect and rejoice.
As we prepare to celebrate the beginning of the brief walk of God on this earth as our teacher and which led to the sacrifice made upon the cross for our sins, we must also prepare to look to the future for when He comes again to judge the living and the dead. One event is past, the other is future, but it is our time in this world which is in the middle. We should look to celebrate, but we should also look to examine what we do in this life as it means for the next.
Paul exhorts us in Romans to act in love, For our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed; the night is advanced, the day is at hand. Let us then throw off the works of darkness (and) put on the armor of light; let us conduct ourselves properly as in the day. (Romans 13:11-13) We must remember that as each day passes, what time we have left for our accomplishments in this world draws nearer to an end; the time for which we must give an account is closer at hand, but we do not know the moment, we do not know the final hour of our end of days.
Jesus tells us, Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come. Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour of night when the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and not let his house be broken into. So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come. (Matthew 24:42-44)
There is great blessing in what we are told for we are invited to the house of the Lord; but we must also heed warning lest we let our precious moments pass without living true to the path to which we are called. As we begin each day, let us pray and ask ourselves, in what way today shall I fulfill the commandment to love?
May the Lord be with you always,
Prayer Soldier
