Now since the children share in blood and flesh, he likewise shared in them, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and free those who through fear of death had been subject to slavery all their life. Surely he did not help angels but rather the descendants of Abraham; therefore, he had to become like his brothers in every way, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest before God to expiate the sins of the people. (Hebrews 2:14-17)
To what do we find ourselves to be enslaved? As we tie ourselves to the materials of this world, we tie ourselves to that which came from dust and will eventually return to dust. When we tie ourselves to lusts and addictions, we become enslaved by that which engages us temporarily, but never fulfills us. We begin empty and empty we remain, enslaved to that which will forever leave us empty.
We work to store up that which will sustain us in this life, but along the way, do we seek to store up that which will sustain us in the next? If we do not, we make ourselves slaves of this world, but we cannot avoid death, so we either pass into the emptiness of the abyss or the fulfillment of the kingdom of heaven. What will be our path if we remain slaves of the world?
Why, then, would we be concerned with that which is temporary at the expense of that which is eternal? Through His sacrifice in atonement for our sins, He gave us hope that if we but believe in Him, we will be free and purified of sin when we leave this world, for if it were not so, we could not hope to enter the kingdom of heaven.
Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed. Simon and those who were with him pursued him and on finding him said, “Everyone is looking for you.” He told them, “Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come.” So he went into their synagogues, preaching and driving out demons throughout the whole of Galilee. (Mark 1:35-39)
He came to explain the Word so that we would understand. Through teaching and parables He spoke so that peoples of different understandings would come to know the true meaning of the law and the prophecy; the life with one another and with God to which we are called. The purpose for which He came was so that all would hear, all would know the truth of the Word, so that all who believes in Him would be saved.
Blessed are we that God is merciful. Blessed are we that God would send His only begotten Son to reveal the complete truth of the Word to us. Blessed are we that through His sacrifice, we might be healed of our sins. Through prayer, we can offer our thanks and praise for all with which He has blessed us so that we may have the hope of joining Him in the kingdom of heaven forever and ever.
May the peace and blessings of the Lord be with you always,
Prayer Soldier
