The Gifts Brought to and Which Came from Bethlehem

Scripture:

Arise, be enlightened, O Jerusalem: for your light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon you. For behold darkness shall cover the earth, and a mist the people: but the Lord shall arise upon you, and his glory shall be seen upon you. And the Gentiles shall walk in your light, and kings in the brightness of your rising. Lift up your eyes round about, and see: all these are gathered together, they are come to you: your sons shall come from afar, and your daughters shall rise up at your side. Then shall you see, and abound, and your heart shall wonder and be enlarged, when the multitude of the sea shall be converted to you, the strength of the Gentiles shall come to you. The multitude of camels shall cover you, the dromedaries of Madian and Epha: all they from Saba shall come, bringing gold and frankincense: and showing forth praise to the Lord. (Isaiah 60:1-6)

If yet you have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me towards you: How that, according to revelation, the mystery has been made known to me, which in other generations was not known to the sons of men, as it is now revealed to his holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit: That the Gentiles should be fellow heirs and of the same body: and co-partners of his promise in Christ Jesus, by the gospel. (Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6)

When Jesus therefore was born in Bethlehem of Juda, in the days of king Herod, behold, there came wise men from the East to Jerusalem, saying: Where is he that is born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and are come to adore him. And king Herod hearing this, was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And assembling together all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, he inquired of them where Christ should be born. But they said to him: In Bethlehem of Juda. For so it is written by the prophet: And you Bethlehem the land of Juda are not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of you shall come forth the captain that shall rule my people Israel.

Then Herod, privately calling the wise men learned diligently of them the time of the star which appeared to them; And sending them into Bethlehem, said: Go and diligently inquire after the child, and when you have found him, bring me word again, that I also may come and adore him. Who having heard the king, went their way; and behold the star which they had seen in the East, went before them, until it came and stood over where the child was. And seeing the star they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And entering into the house, they found the child with Mary his mother, and falling down they adored him: and opening their treasures, they offered him gifts; gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having received an answer in sleep that they should not return to Herod, they went back another way into their country.
(Matthew 2:1-12)

Reflection:

Though darkness seduces the children of His creation, those who seek the light of truth shall be blessed. Many will wander in the darkness for they fail to see the blessing of the light, the freedom from the strife and misery of evil, the blessing of charity over greed, the blessing of love over hate, the blessing of selflessness over selfishness, the blessing of prayer over silence of the heart, the blessing of love of God over the ways of the world. Many have gathered to follow the ways of darkness, but blessed is the world because of those who gather to follow the light of the Lord, for through Him hope prevails. Blessed are those who open their eyes and turn to the warmth of the light, for through them, the blessings of love shall spread from heart to heart and the will of God shall be done through the works of charity and kindness done through their hands. Blessed are those who turn from the darkness, for they will find purpose through faith and discover a better way.

To each of the children of His creation, He has granted gifts to share. Through His grace we have a purpose which may be put to the blessings of others. Through the sharing of these gifts, we join as partners in the blessings which may be found only through the grace of living according to His Word. As we share our gifts as an expression of love for God and the children of His creation, we walk the path for which He sent His only begotten Son to be the light. In prayer, we should offer thanks and praise for the blessings He brings.

And so it continues through the generations that some shall seek the light and others are lured to the darkness. Because of the love of the Father, He sent the light of His Son so that all who wander will see the way, the truth and the path of His Word. Those who understand this blessing are drawn to Him. The gift which was given was announced by angels to shepherds watching over their flocks. The sign of a star would lead the Magi to Him, a sign of which would be spoken across the generations. Those evil of heart would also see, but instead of turning to Him and falling to their knees, they resolved to a different path; a path which many are seduced to walk to this very day.

Through greed for his worldly power, a king would try to remove Him. Sorrow beset many as innocent lives were taken in the attempt to end the life of the One. Evil did not prevail because of those who cared for Him so that prophesy would be fulfilled. Through the generations, the wicked have come forth to remove even the mention of His name, but His worship and praise remain on the lips of the faithful and continues to be passed through the generations. The ways of evil will seek to remove Him from all which is said and done. When evil does not prevail during one generation, it will seek to corrupt the next. And so it is that evil has seduced many to come forth to employ whatever means to remove Him from the lips of the children, for if the children are seduced away, the faith of a generation will be lost. When a generation is broken, so too is the foundation upon which the next is built.

Though worldly leaders seek to outlaw the mention of Him and persecute those who worship Him, what is forbidden by the worldly cannot be extinguished from the hearts of the faithful. Through the whisper of prayers, praises shared and those who live as examples of His love and charity, He continues in the hearts of the children of His creation despite the best efforts of the wicked. And so it is that He can be removed from our lives only if we allow it. He lives in our hearts and waits for the moment we seek Him in prayer.

Blessed are those who bowed to worship Him, for they understood the greatness before them. The word of those moments have spread through the generations, for the greatest gift to the world was given through a babe lying in a manger. A mother who gave birth in mean estate would cradle Him and care for Him until His hour would come. Blessed are those who saw and witnessed. Blessed are the generations, for through His life, death and resurrection; salvation was brought to all who believe in Him and through their belief, keep Him in their hearts.

May the peace and blessings of the Lord be with you always,
Prayer Soldier
