As they continued their journey he [Jesus] entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him. She had a sister named Mary [who] sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak. Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me." The Lord said to her in reply, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her." (Luke 10:38-42)
It is often easy to become distracted by the needs of the world. We are faced with worries as to our shelter, our food, and what will come of the day. We must worry about what is demanded of us by the world and what we must do within it to survive. We are faced with daily choices as to what must be done. Our concerns can become overwhelming such that as we deal with the world, we ignore the needs of the soul.
There is what we do which has meaning only for the moment and there is what we do which has meaning for eternity. We must decide upon our priorities, but in so doing we should not leave forgotten that which seems far off, for we do not know when the moment will come where our days will come to an end and our beliefs shall be judged by what we have done and what we have failed to do. If we neglect the needs of the soul, the day will come where we profess to Him our faith, but we will have nothing to demonstrate the sincerity of our words. How, then, do we expect Him to judge us; only by what we say?
We cannot earn our way into heaven by what we do, for that was purchased upon the cross for those who believe in the One who will come to judge them. Still, we must ask of ourselves, what meaning will He give to our words if we do not act as we speak? As we hear His Word and study its meaning, we will learn what He asks of us; the way we should live to demonstrate our belief in Him. As we stand before Him, He sees what is within our heart. As we keep His commandments, we demonstrate the sincerity of our belief in Him.
Blessed are those who live their faith as they speak, for their word shall have meaning.
