Anonymous writes "PASCAGOULA -- Nearly three months after classes resumed at Resurrection Catholic Elementary School and St. Peter the Apostle Catholic School following their closure after Hurricane Katrina, school officials still strive to improve the buildings and environment.
During the storm, Resurrection received several feet of flooding, while St. Peter was severely wind-damaged.
Repairs continue at Resurrection Catholic Elementary School, including the installation of several classroom doors, as the campus continues to make progress toward "normal."
"We're still working to restore our cafeteria," principal Elizabeth Benefield said.
The dining area is used for meals every day, but several pieces of kitchen equipment still need to be replaced, she said.
Only recently were enough cash donations received to order $25,000 worth of reading books, Benefield added.
"It's getting better," she said. "Little by little He (God) provides."
Benefield said it may take more than a year for the school to return to where it was before Katrina.
Across the city, goals are more short-term.
Volunteers from Wake Forest University worked Thursday building storage sheds for donations delivered to St. Peter the Apostle Catholic School.
"We're trying to save stuff, and we don't know what we'll use," St. Peter principal Sister Bernadette McNamara said.
Children in grades two though six have been attending Resurrection since classes resumed in October, after weeks of closure from Hurricane Katrina and severe damage to the school.
Three-year-old pre-kindergartners through first-graders are still at St. Peter on Telephone Road, but the building that housed the upper grades was demolished in December.
Truckloads of donations have been distributed, and the lack of storage space means some metal and plastic furniture is stored outside. The new sheds will help shelter goods that must be stored inside.
It is a temporary solution to a much larger question.
Since the hurricane, the fate of St. Peter school has been unclear.
Biloxi Diocese Bishop Thom-as Rodi is expected to make a decision on the rebuilding or closure of the school by mid-January. "
