 News: Celebrating or Forcing Diversity???

Religious

A school in Lye, England required students and teachers to wear the traditional Muslim garments during a belated Eid Celebration.  This was said to be a learning experience and a celebration of diversity and multi-culturalism.  Then, trying to get parents involved they invited “moms only” for a gathering.  This in keeping with Muslim tradition that married women should not mix with other men.

I think the learning aspect of this is great!  I remember in school we kept passports which we got stamped from each country along our journey through learning.  We even had food brought in from time to time.  I think we should teach our children about many different cultures.  In most cases it drives a better appreciation of their own culture, and better understanding of others.

I think it was bad however to carry it out in this manner.  Teach them the culture, don’t force it on them.  This is forcing religious beliefs on the entire school and faculty.  That would be like a principle saying that everyone must attend church services or say a prayer.  We can’t even talk about God in schools anymore let alone pray or go to church services.

I think if they required students and teachers to wear Muslim garments and whatnot during the Muslim tradition, they should do the same with other religions as well in order to be TRULY multi-culture. Christianity, Judaisim and not just Muslim.
The part about forcing our religions on others is where I'm confused. As Christians we are supposed to proclaim the Gospel, not keep it to ourselves. And as Christians, we should pray that prayer would be allowed back in school. :)
