RedAngel writes "St. Aloysius Gonzaga-Patron Saint of youth-(1568-1591) St. Aloysius was born in the 16th century, amid the Black Death in Europe. He was born into a wealthy family, amid pleasures and privileges, yet all these things did not satisfy his heart. He was always known for his devotion and piety, even when he was a small child. One day, he read about the Jesuit priests in Spain, and felt he was called. His father refused to give his consent. He tried to pressure young Aloysius into staying into his vocation at the royal court...but to no avail. Finally, his father gave in. St. Aloysius became a priest. When he was younger, he was also known as a zealous penitent. He would fast, scourge himself,etc... When he became a priest, all that changed. He had to get used to eating at regular times and was not allowed to pray at certain times. With people falling sick from the plague, the Jesuits opened a hospital. They cared for all the sick there. Because of his exposure to the plague, St. Aloysius became very ill and died from the plague himself. He was only 23 years old.
Reflection: Why is St. Aloysius Gonzaga the patron of youth? What comes to mind is that he died at a young age, in the 'odor of sanctity'. While his peers were taking advantage of all the pleasures, Aloysius denied them. While people were being entertained by the court, Aloysius was praying. He did things out of the norm for someone who is born to privileges. He is the patron of youth because he would go out of his way to love God, even out of the norm. He is a model we can all look up to."
