Prayer-Soldier writes " USA Today reported on 25 Oct 09 in an Associated Press article that Jose Feliciano (64) was charged for the slaying of Father Edward Hinds (61). The report indicated that Hinds was killed as the result of an argument over Feliciano's continued employment at the St Patrick's church located in the suburb of Chatham, NJ. The article related that Father Moran, who was appointed as temporary spiritual leader of the parish in the wake of the loss of Father Hinds, said, "This is a tragedy for this community, it's a tragedy for Father Ed and his family, and it's a tragedy for the Feliciano family."
According to a 25 Oct 09 CNN report, Feliciano confessed to the murder on 24 Oct 09 during police questioning. The report related that as a result of the attack, Hinds suffered multiple stab wounds to his upper torso and the back of his head along with defensive wounds on his hands. Hinds also suffered a beating as indicated by contusions and bruises to his face.
According to an Associated Press report posted 25 Oct 09, parishioner Dan Langborgh (47) expressed disbelief after learning the news. Langborgh, who lives across the street from the church, said, "Jose is a very nice guy who has been around for many years. He's the last person I would have suspected."
The consensus of many reports were that Hinds and Feliciano were both quiet, soft spoken men who were respected within the parish and the community. The Associated Press report related, “Parishioner Michael Marotta, 47, said he would not have hesitated to leave his three children in the care of either Hinds or Feliciano.”
As the investigation continues, the parishioners are left struggling with what triggered such an act of violence that leaves them without a pastor and a well liked employee and parishioner. While employment can be an emotional issue, one must wonder what would drive a mild man to such a brutal act upon a cleric.
