 Pelosi and Bishops on Abortion

Pro-Life Prayer-Soldier writes "On 6 Nov 09, ABC New's George Stephanopoulos reported on meetings between Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and representatives of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).  The meeting was apparently an effort to resolve the concerns over language in the House's version of the Health Care Bill which could lead to public funding of abortion.  On ABC's Top Line, Stephanopoulos said, “About 40 to 41 House Democrats, holding back their votes on health care because they don't want any public funding on abortion.”  The concern is that despite language that appears to prohibit public funding of abortion, it is viewed by many as merely an accounting gimmick.

The meetings with the USCCB representatives is part of an attempt to gain enough Democratic votes in favor of the House Health Care Bill in time for a 7 Nov 09 vote.  Comments by the pundits, however, are that it will be a challenge to resolve the issues in time for a Saturday vote.

LifeSiteNews.com reported on 6 Nov 09 that the USSCB condemned the recent attempts to address the issue.  The report stated, “The response by the USCCB may have a significant impact on pro-life lawmakers' resolve to block the abortion-expanding bill.”

A 6 Nov 09 USSCB News Release related that the U.S. bishops sent an urgent message to the U.S. House of Representatives.  The message urged representatives to “vote for essential changes and a fair process in the House of Representatives to ensure that needed health care reform legislation truly protects the life, dignity, health and consciences of all.”  The message went on to say, “Unfortunately, the legislation moving to the House floor falls fundamentally short of this essential goal.”

The bishops expressed concern that “the current legislation before the House of Representatives fails to keep in place the longstanding federal policy against the use of federal funds for elective abortion or for plans that include elective abortion.”  The message related the bishop's position that, “Without such protection we will have to oppose the current legislation until this fundamental flaw is remedied.”

A 6 Nov 09 CNSNews posting related that USCCB objected to the House Democrat plan in that it was essentially a “money-laundering system.”  The report related that Doug Johnson of the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) offered that recent compromise attempts were an effort, “To try to provide some political cover so that a few congressmen can claim they voted for something that prevented federal funding of abortion, even though the reality is they’re voting for a bill that will establish a nationwide federal agency program that will pay for abortion on demand, with government funds.”
