AHA Why Believe in God Campaign |

Prayer-Soldier writes "On 11 Nov 09, the American Humanist Association announced they were launching a “Godless Holiday Campaign.” The release stated, “Already appearing today in the New York Times and Washington Post, the message will soon be blazoned on the sides, taillights, and interiors of over 200 Washington DC Metro buses.” The messages referenced will include the statement, “Why believe in a god? Just be good for goodness' sake.”
The release quoted Fred Edwords, director of communications for the American Humanist Association, as saying, "Some folks may be offended but that isn't our purpose. We just want to reach those open to this message but unaware how widespread their views are.”
In a 23 Nov 09 report, USA Today related that the ads would feature pictures of smiling people wearing Santa hats. The report stated, “...the ads seems to be again intended to stir up publicity with their provocative message: 'No God? ... No Problem!'”
In a 12 Nov 09 FOX News report, it was noted that “In lifting lyrics from 'Santa Claus is Coming to Town,' the Washington-based group is wading into what has become a perennial debate over commercialism, religion in the public square and the meaning of Christmas.”
The FOX News report alludes to the range of controversies embodied in a culture war that continues to rage over Christmas. As Christians have noted various efforts to remove references to Christ during the Christmas season, the AHA has now introduced the most direct message to take Christ out of Christmas. Instead of using euphemisms such as “happy holidays” in the attempt to generate a generic holiday, the AHA challenges the very existence of God.
FOX News quoted Mathew Stayer as saying, "It's the ultimate grinch to say there is no God at a time when millions of people around the world celebrate the birth of Christ," Staver is the chairmen of the Liberty Counsel, a group which has intervened in disputes over nativity scenes and government bans on Christmas decorations.
While groups such as the AHA seek to place doubts about God in the public square, the fact remains, many will still flock to churches on Christmas Eve and Christmas day.
