Prayer-Soldier writes "OPINION: On 1 Jun 2012, the movie, “For Greater Glory,” opened in movie theaters across America. As usual for any film with a moral connection, the film is being panned by movie critics, but you know a film captivates the audience when only a few get up to leave when the credits begin to roll. Most of those in the screening I attended remained seated until the film stopped rolling. The audience remained captivated by the eyes looking at them, through pictures from another generation, of those who stood for their freedom.
“For Greater Glory” is an action film based upon the events of the Cristeros War, circa 1926-1929. It portrays a period of Mexican history where the government made an attempt to outlaw the Catholic religion and the people of the countryside stood up for their religious freedom. As the events unfold, the film follows the lives of those who must make decisions as they examine their beliefs, values, and depths of faith.
As a message from history, the events serve as a reminder as to the abuses and failings of those in various positions of power, large and small. It is also a message of hope as the film reveals profiles of leadership and courage founded in journeys of faith. The events stand as one more example as to the persecution of Christians by emperors, kings, politicians and others who seek the end of faith in God. As the events run their course, though, faith remains. Though Christian faith remains under attack, the faithful continue to fulfill the prophecy of Jesus, who said to Peter, “And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church,and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:18)
