Looking Forward

And you shall anoint Jehu, the son of Namsi, to be king over Israel: and Eliseus, the son of Saphat, of Abelmeula, you shall anoint to be prophet in your room.

And Elias departing from thence, found Eliseus, the son of Saphat, plowing with twelve yoke of oxen: and he was one of them that were plowing with, twelve yoke of oxen: and when Elias came up to him, he cast his mantle upon him. And he forthwith left the oxen, and ran after Elias, and said: Let me, I pray you, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you. And he said to him: Go, and return back: for that which was my part, I have done to you. And returning back from him, he took a yoke of oxen, and killed them, and boiled the flesh with the plow of the oxen, and gave to the people, and they ate: and rising up, he went away, and followed Elias, and ministered to him.

( 1 Kings 19:16, 19-21 )

Stand fast and be not held again under the yoke of bondage.

For you, brethren, have been called unto liberty. Only make not liberty an occasion to the flesh: but by charity of the spirit serve one another. For all the law is fulfilled in one word: you shall love your neighbor as yourself. But if you bite and devour one another: take heed you be not consumed one of another. I say then: Walk in the spirit: and you shall not fulfill the lusts of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the spirit: and the spirit against the flesh: For these are contrary one to another: so that you do not the things that you would. But if you are led by the spirit, you are not under the law.

( Galatians 5:1, 13-18 )

And it came to pass, when the days of his assumption were accomplishing, that he steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem. And he sent messengers before his face: and going, they entered into a city of the Samaritans, to prepare for him. And they received him not, because his face was of one going to Jerusalem. And when his disciples, James and John, had seen this, they said: Lord, will you that we command fire to come down from heaven and consume them? And turning, he rebuked them, saying: you know not of what spirit you are. The Son of man came not to destroy souls, but to save.

And they went into another town. And it came to pass, as they walked in the way, that a certain man said to him: I will follow you wheresoever you go. Jesus said to him: The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air nests: but the Son of man has no where to lay his head. But he said to another: Follow me. And he said: Lord, suffer me first to go and to bury my father. And Jesus said to him: Let the dead bury their dead: but go you and preach the kingdom of God. And another said: I will follow you, Lord; but let me first take my leave of them that are at my house. Jesus said to him: No man putting his hand to the plow and looking back is fit for the kingdom of God.

(Luke 9:51-62)

Our memories fill us in many ways. It is from our memories that we consider what lies ahead. What we learn and what we bring into our heart influences the choices which will yield the conditions of our future. Anxiety fills us as we consider the paths before us and assess what we believe to be the best choice. We might ask ourselves, what will I miss, what will I leave behind should I take the wrong step?

In our quest for happiness in the moment, we often fail to consider the consequences of our decisions to what will come in our future, not in terms of what we shall shortly receive, but what will become an obstacle to us? What we often fail to consider is what will follow and haunt us over the course of time?

We all have thoughts about what we shall do, where we shall go, who we shall be; but what shall we do when we recognize the call to something greater than our comprehension? Will we retreat to that which is familiar, that which is comfortable, that of which we are fond; or will we take the step forward, not knowing to where it shall lead?

Each moment ahead of us is a risk, for should we make the wrong choice, we squander blessings and increase misfortunes. Each of us endeavors to make the best choices we can with the information we have, but what are we to do when we must make choices concerning paths we do not know?

We endeavor to observe what will enable our choices. Our goals are set by what we perceive to yield us happiness. We measure, we evaluate, we weigh options and courses of action; the more information we gather, the better we believe we are enabled to evaluate the choices before us, but it is always what we do not know which yields to us poor decisions and the consequences of pain and sorrow to which they lead.

The path is better for us if we have the right guide, one who will lead us, without deception, to the path of true blessings. The distractions of the world conspire to confuse us and divert us to paths which may appear exciting in their beginning, but which only lead to a dark abyss. Many false guides propose to show us the blessed way, but they know it not. Let us, then, seek the hand of the One who will lead us without deception, the One who will lead us on the path of blessing to His kingdom of eternal love.

Questions for further reflection:

Who do we follow and to where are we following them?

Who can guide us to the path which frees us from the bondage of sin?

In what ways do we hesitate to take the hand of Jesus so He may lead us?

May the peace and blessings of the Lord be with you always,
Prayer Soldier
