Consequences of What We Do Not Know

Scripture:

And Peter opening his mouth, said: You know the word which has been published through all Judea: for it began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached. Jesus of Nazareth: how God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. And we are witnesses of all things that he did in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem: whom they killed, hanging him upon a tree. Him God raised up the third day and gave him to be made manifest, not to all the people, but to witnesses preordained by God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him, after he arose again from the dead. And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that it is he who was appointed by God to be judge of the living and of the dead. To him all the prophets give testimony, that by his name all receive remission of sins, who believe in him.
(Acts 10:34a, 37-43)

Therefore, if you be risen with Christ, seek the things that are above; where Christ is sitting at the right hand of God: Mind the things that are above, not the things that are upon the earth. For you are dead; and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ shall appear, who is your life, then you also shall appear with him in glory.
(Colossians 3:1-4)

And on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalen came early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulcher; and she saw the stone taken away from the sepulcher. She ran, therefore, and comes to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them: They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulcher, and we know not where they have laid him. Peter therefore went out, and that other disciple, and they came to the sepulcher. And they both ran together, and that other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulcher. And when he stooped down, he saw the linen cloths lying; but yet he went not in. Then comes Simon Peter, following him, and went into the sepulcher, and saw the linen cloths lying, and the napkin that had been about his head, not lying with the linen cloths, but apart, wrapped up into one place. Then that other disciple also went in, who came first to the sepulcher: and he saw, and believed. For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.
(John 20:1-9)

Reflection:

It is what we do not know which makes us vulnerable to making bad decisions. The reasons we may be unaware of information essential to our choices varies. It might be that we are not exposed to those who teach us truth. It could be that we do not avail ourselves of opportunities to learn what is right and just. It might be that we do not comprehend. It could be that we simply do not care to learn. It might be that the teachers of truth are silenced. It could be that falsehoods distract us from truth. In any situation, what we do not know may lead us to not only bad choices, but choices of harm.

In some cases, the information available to us is trivia. It is nice to know. If we choose incorrectly, the consequences are minor. We perhaps pay closer attention to issues of finance, relationships, and life where choices may leave us poor, alone, afflicted, or without life itself. Indeed, as the magnitude of consequences rise, our tendency is to research and learn to enable sound decisions. As we consider the priorities for our learning, we often concern ourselves most with matters which enable our quality of life, but do we consider the choices we must make which may carry eternal consequences?

Parents teach their children the basic means to survive in this world. Indeed, our parents are normally our first teachers, but as others join in sharing knowledge, the responsibility of parents does not end. They are the ones responsible to provide oversight of others so their children will learn truth and not be misled. Blessed are those who have parents who teach, but what if the parent was not taught truth? What if the parent does not know what should be taught? What if the parent is absent, either by choice or for reasons beyond their control? Who will teach the child? How are the generations which follow to know?

We are told, ?For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord, shall be saved.? (Romans 10:13) It is the good news of the Lord, but what if the news does not come to our ear? This very question is asked in scripture: ?How then shall they call on him, in whom they have not believed? Or how shall they believe him, of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear, without a preacher?? (Romans 10:14) Indeed, how are we to know if there is not someone who will teach? How will the youth of our day know if there is no one who speaks of the One who brings eternal life?

Some parents proudly pronounce, ?It is not fitting for me to impose my beliefs upon my child. I will leave it up to them to decide.? This sounds noble in the offer of freedom, but how is the child to decide as to the values which shall mold their choices if they are not taught concerning their most important choices; the choices which are made which shall determine the direction of their lives, or even more important, their eternity? If parents do not teach their children, how are their children to know?

If we are not aware of what offers us hope, how are we to have hope? Blessed are we that there is One with such love for us, that He laid down His life so He could take it up again to conquer death and sin. Blessed are we that His sacrifice was so we might be forgiven our sin so we might have eternal life in His kingdom. Blessed are we that upon His resurrection, He commissioned His disciples to make disciples of all nations and to teach them to observe His commandments (cf. Matthew 29:19-20), for if He did not send forth those who would teach His truth, how were the children of His Heavenly Father's creation to know?

He calls to us, but what if we do not know to listen? What if we do not know to look for the blessings He gives and the wonderful ways He works in our lives? What is the consequence to the soul? Blessed are those who have learned and who endeavor to listen for Him, but in our rejoicing, we must not forget those who have not heard.

If we do not know, let us seek to learn. If we have heard, let us share the blessings of the good news brought to our ears. Parents, teach your children so they may grow with the blessings of the Lord within their heart and so they too, may one day teach the children of their day. As we learn, let us rejoice that we will not be led into the darkness through our ignorance.

Questions for further reflection:

In what ways do we witness His blessings and the many wonderful ways He works within our lives?

In what ways do we testify to the good news which is revealed to us by our Lord to our ear and our heart?

In what ways do we lift up our hearts in thanks and praise for the sacrifice made for us?

May the peace and blessings of the Lord be with you always,
Prayer Soldier
