How Do We Listen for Him?

Scripture:

And the Lord spoke again to Ahaz, saying: Ask you a sign of the Lord your God, either unto the depth of hell, or unto the height above. And Ahaz said: I will not ask, and I will not tempt the Lord. And he said: Hear, therefore, O house of David: Is it a small thing for you to be grievous to men, that you are grievous to my God also? Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign. Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son and his name shall be called Emmanuel.
(Isaiah 7:10-4)

Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God. Which he had promised before, by his prophets, in the holy scriptures, concerning his Son, who was made to him of the seed of David, according to the flesh, who was predestined the Son of God in power, according to the spirit of sanctification, by the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ from the dead: By whom we have received grace and apostleship for obedience to the faith, in all nations, for his name: Among whom are you also the called of Jesus Christ: To all that are at Rome, the beloved of God, called to be saints. Grace to you and peace, from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
(Romans 1:1-7)

Now the generation of Christ was in this wise. When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child, of the Holy Spirit. Whereupon Joseph, her husband, being a just man, and not willing publicly to expose her, was minded to put her away privately. But while he thought on these things, behold the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in his sleep, saying: Joseph, son of David, fear not to take unto you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her, is of the Holy Spirit. And she shall bring forth a son: and you shall call his name Jesus. For he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done that it might be fulfilled which the Lord spoke by the prophet, saying: Behold a virgin shall be with child, and bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. And Joseph rising up from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him, and took unto him his wife.
(Matthew 1:18-24)

Reflection:

To some, God revealed His will in their dreams. To others, He sent visions. To others, He sent angels. To still others, He sent prophets. To us all, He sent His only begotten Son so we might learn from His Word and all which He taught.

We might wonder, why do some hear His voice while others do not? Perhaps the answer might be found in the ways we are listening. We are told, He approaches us with a "light, silent sound." (cf. 1 Kings 19:11-13) He approaches our heart, but it must be open to Him to receive Him. It must be open to Him if we are to hear what He desires of us. It must be open to Him if we are to understand Him.

The noise of the world distracts, but if we listen carefully, we will hear within our hearts to where God seeks to guide us. Joseph was conflicted by what he faced and by what he felt in his heart for Mary. He knew for what the law called, but his heart was also open to the Lord so that Joseph might understand something he did not know and the mission to which God called Him. In His sleep, Joseph received the vision of an angel of the Lord speaking to him and knew it was more than a dream; and so, he rose to follow the instruction of the Lord.

Joseph fulfilled his mission by protecting the Mother placed in his care. He also fulfilled his mission by protecting the Child which she carried and would soon bring into the world. Through angels sent by God, Joseph and Mary received and followed the instruction of the Heavenly Father.

As scripture recounts these events, we might be tempted to wonder, ?Where are my visions? Where are my angels?? Perhaps they have been walking with us and speaking to us all along, but in our expectations of that which surrounds us, we have left the eyes and ears of our heart closed. Perhaps we have allowed the worries and distractions of the world to drown out what God reveals through His "light, silent sound."

If we take a moment and reflect on the course of our life, we might begin to see the fingerprints of God. We might see who He has sent to cross our path. We might see the opportunities we were given to do for another so we might fulfill His commandments of love. (cf. Matthew 22:36-40) We might see where another tried to help us. We might even remember a moment where we felt His Spiritual embrace or heard His "light silent sound;" leading us, guiding us, calling to us, nudging us to the path He desires for us.

In the moment, we might not comprehend the doors closed to us or opened for us. (cf. Isaiah 22:22, Revelation 3:7) We may not comprehend the reason as to why we are where we are at. We do not see all as God sees, nor can we see as He does across all time or across all the choices of the children of His creation. If we trust His ambitions for us, then, we need not worry about the ambitions we have for ourselves. We need only learn to hear and follow His "light, silent sound." (cf. 1 Kings 19:12)

In prayer, let us open our hearts to Him. Let us allow Him to reveal to us the gifts and talents He has placed within us and the purpose to which He desires those gifts to be put, so that His will may be done. Let us allow Him to lead us to the missions He has for us. Let us allow Him to work through us in ways we cannot accomplish through our desires. Let us not place our ambitions ahead of those He has for us, for while we may seek a path to achieve our desires in this world, we must trust, His desire is to guide us to the path by which we may receive His embrace and take the Hand extended to guide us to His kingdom where love is eternally shared by all. ( cf. Mark 8:34-38 )

Questions for further reflection:

In what ways do we weary our Creator?

In what ways do we listen for to what God calls us?

In what ways do we allow God to lead us to the purpose and missions He has for us?

May the peace and blessings of the Lord be with you always,
Prayer Soldier
