The Guardian Angel Christian Store began as a prayer Web site, offering written prayers, requests and Scripture readings to Internet visitors. Jared and Dora Bonebrake, along with Jared’s parents, Sharon and Doug Bonebrake, wanted to offer more and decided to open an Internet bookstore from where they could sell items at competitive prices and support their mission to promote home and religious education.
After the All Things Catholic store closed in The Citadel Mall, they decided to go beyond the Internet and pursue ownership of a store located in the mall to support the Mall’s Catholic Center. Unable to negotiate a location within The Citadel, they opened up a store just outside the mall on April 26, 2005. Believing that angels helped watch over them through this entire process, they named the business Guardian Angel Christian Store, which has since moved to its current location on North Academy Blvd.
According to Jared Bonebrake, Guardian Angel Store carries more gifts than books at this time, but the store is continually evolving. They have an emphasis on home schoooling resources with a special section for homeschooling families.
"We want to encourage more home school participation and foster home school relations," said Jared.
Jared and Dora have two very young children that they plan on homeschooling one day.
"We believe that education begins at birth," Dora said. "Religion goes beyond Sunday in church. There should always be religion taught in the home, even if a family does not want to home school."
Sharon said that the store has "Christian" in its name because it wants to reach out to non-Catholics in the community. A good deal of the merchandise appeals to both Catholics and non-Catholics, and the store will not sell anything contrary to the Catholic faith, she added.
The store also celebrates local artists through their "Neighborhood Celebrity" section. It features homemade rosaries, local woodworking, local artwork and authors.
Guardian Angel Store is the exclusive distributor for the book "God Calls You By Name," by local author Joyce Stolberg. The book is used for RCIA classes and includes an Imprimatur by Bishop Michael Sheridan.
Although a date has not yet been set, the store is currently planning a grand-opening event to celebrate its anniversary. The store also hopes to act as a Contract Postal Unit by July, according to Sharon, allowing customers to purchase and mail items on the same visit.
