How do we recognize the Holy Spirit?
070812 How do we recognize the Holy Spirit? Is it a feeling within us? Is it something we recognize surrounding us? Is it something that touches us? We may have many questions about the Holy Spirit, but by seeking it, we will come to know it. As we...

  Weakness and Hope
070803 We are filled with many weaknesses. We are subject to many temptations. Though we may fail in the moment, the hour, the day; He is still there for us. The time we spend with sin is empty. It is Satan's means to rob us of the fullness of...

  The Universal call to holiness
People tend to have a misconception of who God calls and why...Some people have the notion that the priesthood and religious life is a higher calling than being a mother or a husband or a student, etc...Then there's the opposite, some people would think that raising children to God and...

  The Universal call to holiness
RedAngel, Very perceptive. I just thought I would add a couple of references to scripture which reinforce your thoughts. 1 Corinthians 12: 4 - 31 "There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings...

  False Prophets and Shepherds
070722 Through our journey within this world, we are guided by the word of God, but the word only has meaning if we believe and accept the word. We are presented with many messages of the world and false prophets who have no understanding of the word. We are...

· Patron Saint of Youth-St. Aloysious June 21 - [ 0 comments - 41 reads ]
St. Aloysius Gonzaga-Patron Saint of youth-(1568-1591)
St. Aloysius was born in the 16th century, amid the Black Death in Europe. He was born into a wealthy family, amid pleasures and privileges, yet all these things did not satisfy his heart. He was always known for his devotion and piety, even when he was a small child. One day, he read about the Jesuit priests in Spain, and felt he was called. His father refused to give his consent. He tried to pressure young Aloysius into staying into his vocation at the royal court...but to no avail. Finally, his father gave in. St. Aloysius became a priest. When he was younger, he was also known as a zealous penitent. He would fast, scourge himself,etc... When he became a priest, all that changed. He had to get used to eating at regular times and was not allowed to pray at certain times. With people falling sick from the plague, the Jesuits opened a hospital. They cared for all the sick there. Because of his exposure to the plague, St. Aloysius became very ill and died from the plague himself. He was only 23 years old.

Reflection: Why is St. Aloysius Gonzaga the patron of youth? What comes to mind is that he died at a young age, in the 'odor of sanctity'. While his peers were taking advantage of all the pleasures, Aloysius denied them. While people were being entertained by the court, Aloysius was praying. He did things out of the norm for someone who is born to privileges. He is the patron of youth because he would go out of his way to love God, even out of the norm. He is a model we can all look up to. [Read More]

· Who was St Patrick? - [ 0 comments - 277 reads ]
St Patrick was born in the fourth century to wealthy parents in Britain. When he was sixteen he was captured by Irish raiders attacking his family's estate. He was taken to Ireland and imprisoned for about six years. He was forced to work as a shepherd. He was lonely and afraid. He turned to his religion to help him through. He dreamed of converting the Irish to Christianity.

After many years of captivity, Patrick heard a voice he claimed to be God telling him to leave Ireland. He escaped, walking nearly 200 miles to the coast of Ireland and escaping to Britain. When he was free, Patrick received another dream where an angel appeared telling him to return to Ireland as a missionary. He began his religious training and was sent to Ireland after his ordination as a priest. His mission was to minister to Christians already living in Ireland and to convert the Irish to Christianity.

Patrick included Irish traditions in his teaching instead of attempting to erase the Irish beliefs. He used the bonfires to celebrate Easter because the Irish were used to honoring their gods with fire. He also placed a sun on the cross to create the Celtic cross so that the symbol would seem more natural to the Irish. Legend states Patrick drove all the snakes from Ireland.

It is believed he died on March 17th in the fifth century. St. Patrick's Day is a national holiday in Ireland. St Patrick's Day was first celebrated in America in 1737 in Boston. The first parade was held in New York.

Today we wear green to celebrate the Irish heritage in our country. St. Patrick used the shamrock to explain the trinity as the leaves were the Father, Son and Holy Spirit existing as one. Now the shamrock is worn on his feast day to remember St. Patrick's teachings. [Read More]
· Orthodox Activists Declare War to St. Valentine’s Day - [ 0 comments - 357 reads ]
On the 14th of February activists of the Russian Orthodox youth movement “Georgievtsy!” intend to mount an Internet protest at St. Valentine’s Day considering it a pagan and commercial celebration that promotes promiscuous sexual relations. In an official message they call Internet users to replace their avatars (userpics) with anti-valentines - pictures featuring crossed out red hearts for one day as a sign of “the true love support”. · Fast and Abstinence During Lent - [ 0 comments - 458 reads ]
The Pope and the American Bishops have outlined obligatory fast and abstinence as follows:

Ash Wednesday (February 6) and Good Friday (March 21) – Fast and Abstinence
All Fridays of Lent (February 8-March 14) – Abstinence

What is fasting and who should fast?
On the days of fasting every person ages 18-59 are required to take only one full meal a day. Children, elderly, and those who are sick, taking medication requiring food, pregnant, or breastfeeding are exempt from fasting if their health or their child's health (born or unborn) are compromised.

What is abstinence and who should abstain?
On the days of abstinence every person over the age of 14 are required to abstain from eating meat. Again, if there is a serious health problem, this obligation would not apply.

No Catholic will lightly excuse themselves from these obligations.

Check out my posts in Guardian Angel Store Cookbook Forums for meatless meal ideas. [Read More]
