Prayer-Soldier writes "On 28 May 10, Zenit reported that Catholic Charities has come to the aid of fisherman and others affected by the oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico that resulted from an oil well blowout on 20 Apr 10. According to the report, “It is estimated that the fishing industry will lose some $2.5 billion due to the disaster.”
As the disaster continues to expand, Catholic Charities has established relief centers through local parishes to provide food and other services to those economically impacted by the oil spill.
According to a 28 May 10 MetroCatholic report, Catholic Charities is not seeing the level of donation support for the oil spill disaster that has been seen for other recent disasters. The report indicates that the human need is equal to that of Katrina and Haiti, but according to Catholic Charities CEO, Rev. Larry Snyder, the usual generosity of Americans has not been forth coming in relation to the oil spill.
According to the report, Snyder also pointed out that the event has overshadowed the Nashville flood devastation which has also generated demand for significant charitable need. Snyder speculated, “The entire Gulf Coast situation has been more of a business story and technology remediation story than anything that truly portrays the human impact. The good hearts of our country have not been touched in a way to feel a need to contribute.”
The report noted that Catholic Charities is one of the most experienced disaster relief organizations and was noted for its Katrina work. Snyder noted, “Economic impact is felt one human being at a time and overall the impact of these disasters could reach greater proportions than others.”
