On 2 Aug 10, the Christian Post reported, “Holly Ordway was a highly educated atheist who thought Christianity was 'a historical curiosity' or 'a blemish on modern civilization,' or both.” The report further related that Ordway began to change her view at the age of 31 and wrote of her journey in her recent book, Not God’s Type: A Rational Academic Finds a Radical Faith.
The report noted, Ordway did not have a religious upbringing. The report stated, “Her exposure to Christianity while growing up was minimal and her few encounters with Christians involved televangelists or hellfire and damnation preachers.” Ordway believed whatever stories of the Bible to which she was exposed were no different than a myth or fairytale.
The report quotes Ordway as writing, “"[I]t was fun to consider myself superior to the unenlightened, superstitious masses, and to make snide comments about Christians."
According to an undated Biola Univeristy article, Ordway is quoted as stating, “Smart people don’t become Christians.” The article related that in her journey towards Christianity, Ordway explained, “I was drawn, against my conscious will, and against my own inclination, to be interested in matters of faith.”
In an undated Biola University interview, Ordway related, “I was startled to find that Christian theism had significantly better explanatory power than atheistic naturalism, in terms of explaining why the world is the way it is, and in accounting for my own experiences within it. Learning more about the Incarnation and about God, the most holy Trinity, has further reinforced my confidence that Christianity really does make sense of the world in a way no other worldview does.”
Ordway notes in a 30 Jun 10 blog, “At the heart of atheism is an appealing premise: 'My will be done, not Yours.' If atheism is true, and there is no God, then everything really is all about me, and what I want, and what I can get.” Ordway continues, “No wonder it [atheism] strikes such a chord in our self-obsessed culture.”
Ordway points out, “...if atheism is true, there is no ultimate purpose to life, so we might as well go for self-indulgence,...” Ordway concludes in her blog, “...we may slowly realize that atheism may promise easy self-fulfillment, but it delivers nothing but despair.”
In response to the question presented during the Biola University interview: “If someone is, roughly, in the same spiritual, intellectual, and emotional place that you were once in as an atheist, how would you counsel and encourage them?” Ordway responded, “I would say: Look for the truth.” Ordway continued, “Stop relying on stereotypes of what you think Christians believe, and find out what the serious Christian thinkers say is true. But if you are truly willing to look for the truth, you have to be willing to recognize it when you find it – even if it goes against what you wish were the truth.”
