"Who, then, is the faithful and prudent servant, whom the master has put in charge of the household to distribute to them their food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master on his arrival finds doing so....But is that wicked servant says to himself, 'My master is long delayed,' and begins to beat his fellow servants and eat and drink with drunkards, the servant's master will come at an unexpected hour..." Matthew 24:45-51
This passage to me is the foreshadow of Jesus' coming, the very meaning of Advent. Back in biblical times, a lot of Jewish people knew the Messiah was coming, but did not know whom and they did not know when. Some stood firm and faithfully, fulfilling their duties to their Master, while others enjoyed their time of leisure till the Master came; they thought His coming was long delayed---probably years after they were dead while others thought he would never come at all. The Messiah did come--in the form of a little child born of a Virgin. From the passage above it is safe to say no one expected that.
If Jesus was coming today, how would you expect it? In the form of a little child? As a poor begger man? As a glorious sign in the sky? Or would you dismiss it, saying, "The Messiah doesn't exist?" only to have Jesus disappoint you?
