Greetings to all,

Sometimes there are events which happen in our lives that one must simply sit back and wonder what just happened here? Many times the simple acts of God taken to protect us are likely to go unnoticed, but other times, as events unfold, one must wonder, does God really send guardian angels to protect us?

My story unfolds on the 4th of July, 2010. My wife and I thought about how to celebrate the day, but because of the economy, it appears many celebrations were scaled back or were simply not scheduled. One item on our agenda was fireworks and we looked at our choices which included a show in a former gold mining town which housed several casinos.

I know many will criticize us for spending any time in a casino, but we only go occasionally and when we do, we view it as our contribution to the local economy. We set limits for ourselves so that we do not spend more than we would going to a movie. We spend a little money in exchange for entertainment. Anyway, I digress from the story at hand.

We had made the scenic drive to the isolated town on motorcycle. It had been a beautiful day to ride through God\'s wonderful creation. We also considered this as one of our forms of entertainment as we drove through the wonderful scenery to this former little ghost town. As evening progressed and we were sitting at the slot machines, I was also watching a baseball game on one of the big screen TVs. I noted that it was raining in Denver and remarked about our plans for the evening.

Given our mode of transportation was motorcycle, weather had an obvious impact upon our plans. I made some guesses about how long it would take for the weather in Denver to travel such that it would be an impact to the little town and our route home. We decided not to stay for the fireworks and to switch to plan B for the day, which was to travel back down the mountain, swap out the motorcycle for our car and travel to park on a hill outside of the Air Force Academy to watch their annual fireworks show. Naturally, we had to revise our travel time line.

As we were nearing the finish of our play, an elderly lady sat down to a machine at the end of our row. As I got up to deposit our drink cups into the trash, the lady handed over some coupons to my wife. The woman explained, they give these coupons to those who ride the bus up her. She hand them over and told us we were welcome to use them if we liked. The coupons were such that if we earned so many points on the machine, we would receive $5.00. We thanked the woman with a smile, and thought little more of what was about to happen.

As I looked at the time, I told my wife, we need to leave if we are to dodge the weather and are going to make the other fireworks show. As we were ready to leave, my wife looked at the coupons and wondered how many points we needed to earn the $5.00. We went to the cashier cage and the lady there said my wife needed only five more points.

My wife turned to me and said, “This will only take a moment.” So we walked over to a couple of machines and she began to play to earn her points. Having nothing to do, I decided to play the machine next to her, but was quickly down four dollars. The wife was down seven dollars by the time she earned her five points. She wanted to play a little more to potentially earn a little back. I pointed out the time. A little disappointed at our results, we went over to the cashier cage to redeem the five dollar coupon.

As we left the casino, I chided her about how we just spent eleven dollars to earn five. With those credentials, we could easily run for Congress – but then, we aren\'t really qualified, because at least we know where to stop spending – anyway, I digress again. My wife responded, “But I only lost two.” She was partially right, but as I did the math for her, she said, “Shush, we had fun.”

I then looked at the time and said, “I don\'t know if we are going to make it now. We spent too much time working on that coupon.” I feared that by not sticking to our planned time line would miss the fireworks climax to top off our day. These are little things of importance in the scheme of things and as we started to ride out of town, I felt the desire to rush, but I also reminded myself, there is no reason to put ourselves in danger just to see some fireworks, so whatever my haste, I still needed to be safe.

As we came up the back side of the mountain, I saw the dark clouds on the horizon. They were nearly black in the center. The frequency of lightening told me a severe thunderstorm had enveloped the mountain. I tried to estimate the position of the storm in relation to our course. I did not like driving in the rain, but if we were going to have any chance of making our plans, we were simply going to have to risk getting wet. Little did I anticipate what was to come.

As we transitioned to a four lane highway, I moved to the left lane to go around some slower cars. My timing was very bad, for as I did, I suddenly saw the white path ahead. I knew a black roadway covered in white could not be good, but it was too late to try and move back to the right and perhaps off the road. As we approached, I was surprised at the depth of hail covering the road. To a motorcycle, riding on hail is not only like attempting to drive on little marbles, but on icy marbles at that.

If I had attempted to stop short of where the hail lay, I ran the risk of being run over by traffic behind me as well as losing control on the wet road. I had a split second to make a decision about what to do. I saw the path made through the hail by the tires of cars before me. With a prayer to God to help guide me, I maneuvered into the thin path cleared through the hail.

Carefully, I proceeded down the narrow opening and began to slow as safely as I could. I looked for a spot I could pull over, but any attempt to move to the right side of the road would have required passing through the depth of the hail. I realized our only hope to make it out of danger was to get to the other side of the swath of hail, following in the wake left before me. For over a mile we traveled until we broke into the clear.

I could not help but think that God had sent His guardian angels to guide us through the hail. Had it not been for the wake left before me, we would have been left stranded at best, assuming I could have safely made it to the side of the road without losing control. Given the amount and size of hail, the odds were significantly against me.

Certainly, many would point out that nothing special had truly happened, for it is simply a matter of physics that tires would clear a path through the hail and any experienced motorcycle pilot could take advantage of such a path to travel to safety. Still, a prayer in thanks to God is warranted for guiding my hand through that dangerous moment.

As I began to say a simple thanks to God, my wife somberly spoke over the intercom and remarked, “Had we left any sooner, we would have ended up in the middle of that hail storm.” And then it hit me, had we not been diverted from our plans, that is exactly what would have happened. The results would have been even more dangerous than what we had just survived. While we had helmets to protect our heads, we still would have been exposed to the driving pelting of the hail stones. It was clear by the amount of hail covering the road, the hail storm had lasted for a good period of time and there was no cover to seek along the side of the road. It was a scary thought as to what the ordeal might have been.

I felt at this point, God had certainly sent His guardian angels to not only guide us through the hail, but to keep us out of its most dangerous path. As we began to travel the rest of the way in safety, I thought about the sequence of events. Had the lady not given us her coupons, we would have stuck to our plans. Was she a guardian angel sent by God? Was her mission to divert our plans?

I must wonder, for she could have easily used the coupons for herself. I had to ask myself, what would move her to give her coupons to total strangers when she was playing right along with us? I had to question, why did she give her coupons to us? She could have just as easily given the coupons to one of her traveling companions or even anyone else in the casino, but as events transpired, she gave them to us.

Perhaps she wasn\'t a guardian angel, but simply a kindly old woman just carrying out a random act of kindness. Perhaps her act of random kindness simply paid the dividends we might expect of a guardian angel. If she was not a guardian angel, was it that her heart was predisposed and guided to a simple act that coincidentally kept two other people from harm?

We all might explain the events away in different ways. I must confess, I have never had an angel appear before me, or have I? I must confess, I have never seen the hand of God before me, or have I? I wonder about the many examples in my life which I can only attribute to the grace of God and the guardian angels I believe He sends to protect me. Some may attempt to explain it all away through simple coincidence and dismiss the experiences which drive my belief, but still, I offer a prayer of thanks to God for all His blessings and the guardian angels he sends me. I must apologize for the amount of work I put them through.

God bless,
Confido In Deus
