In times past, God spoke in partial and various ways to our ancestors through the prophets; in these last days, he spoke to us through a son, whom he made heir of all things and through whom he created the universe. (Hebrews 1:1-2)
Throughout the ages, God has sought to speak to us, instruct us, lead us in the ways through which all of His children may live in peace. He has sent angels as messengers, He has chosen prophets to tell us what God asks of us. In sending His only begotten Son, God demonstrated His deepest love for His children, that through the Son, the sins of the world might be forgiven.
As he passed by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea; they were fishermen. Jesus said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Then they abandoned their nets and followed him. He walked along a little farther and saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They too were in a boat mending their nets. Then he called them. So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him. (Mark 1:16-20)
Jesus called to His Apostles to follow Him. In their response to His call, they left behind what was and began a new journey. Through Him they learned the true meaning of the Word. He instructed them and then sent them to the far reaches of the world to spread the good news to all the children of God. To each one who hears the Word, Jesus is asking them to follow Him.
As we hear the Word, how are we moved? Are we filled with curiosity or a desire? Is what we feel the same today as it was the day before? The Apostles were simply asked once and they followed, but for others, they have been called, but they do not hear; they have been called, but they are not quick to respond. Blessed are we that He has such love for all His children that He continues to call though we may be slow to respond. Whatever we feel, whatever fills our heart, His call will continue for He desires to lose not one of His flock; He desires that all of His children respond to the salvation and everlasting life to which He has called them.
Through prayer, we respond to His call. Through prayer we open our hearts to Him. Through prayer, we are able to give Him thanks and praise. Through prayer we are able to present our intentions, but most importantly, we are able to spend time with Him. If today we hear His voice, let us not harden our hearts, rather, let us embrace Him and return the love He has taught us.
May the peace and blessings of the Lord be with you always,
Prayer Soldier
