The One Who Guides Us To Truth

The God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his Son Jesus, whom you indeed delivered up and denied before the face of Pilate, when he judged he should be released. But you denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you. But the author of life you killed, whom God has raised from the dead, of which we are witnesses.

And now, brethren, I know that you did it through ignorance, as did also your rulers. But those things which God before had shown by the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ should suffer, he has so fulfilled. Be penitent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out.
(Acts 3:13-15, 17-19)

My little children, these things I write to you, that you may not sin. But if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the just: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world. And by this we know that we have known him, if we keep his commandments. He who says that he knows him, and keeps not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But he that keeps his word, in him in very deed the charity of God is perfected; and by this we know that we are in him. (1 John 2:1-5)

And they told what things were done in the way; and how they knew him in the breaking of the bread. Now while they were speaking these things, Jesus stood in the midst of them, and said to them: Peace be to you; it is I, fear not. But they being troubled and frightened, supposed that they saw a spirit. And he said to them: Why are you troubled, and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? See my hands and feet, that it is I myself; handle, and see: for a spirit has not flesh and bones, as you see me to have. And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet.

But while they yet believed not, and wondered for joy, he said: Have you any thing to eat? And they offered him a piece of a broiled fish, and a honeycomb. And when he had eaten before them, taking the remains, he gave to them. And he said to them: These are the words which I spoke to you, while I was yet with you, that all things must needs be fulfilled, which are written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Then he opened their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures.

And he said to them: Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise again from the dead, the third day: And that penance and remission of sins should be preached in his name, unto all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And you are witnesses of these things.
( Luke 24:35-48 )

Reflection:

There is much we do through ignorance. We often remark, ?Had I only known.? How are we to know what is right and just when there is so much within the world to confuse our understanding? We see the world through our agendas, but often we fail to see through the lens of His love and His will for us. We argue among ourselves as to what is truth, but we ignore the One who seeks to lead us in truth.

We are often blinded by our desires; therefore, we are willing to justify and rationalize our experience of the world through the filter of what we wish rather than what is. We believe what we desire to see, though it may be only an illusion. If we cannot see how we deceive ourselves, how are we to know what is true over that which is sown by the evil one to confuse us?

By ourselves, we cannot know. We are but the blind professing to see, but as the blind, we lead ourselves into traps and holes we could easily avoid if we could but clean the deceptions from our eyes. We sometimes believe we see better when we look back upon our experiences, but even our memory is used by the evil one to play tricks upon our perceptions.

A person without the ability of sight may believe it is safe to walk the streets for they have nothing to alert them of the dangers which are before them. Their understanding of truth is based upon their hearing. They may hear the dangers of vehicles and all which makes sound, but they do not have the ability to see the holes in which they might step or what awaits them in the shadows. If they but walked with someone who had sight, they might be guided to avoid the dangers of the path.

If we are in doubt, we must trust that He has sent the Holy Spirit to guide us. But how are we to know the Holy Spirit, for as the evil one sends false prophets, can he not also send false spirits? If we trust that what is of God is good, then, the test He has given us is the test of His love. The evil one may give the illusion of good intentions, but by his very nature, he cannot deliver that which only love can yield. He may tempt those with worldly desires, but in the end, if the conclusion does not yield that which is good, then, it is not of God.

We might ask, how is it then, that God allows evil within us and to come from us who are His creation? It is through Him which all good things come; therefore, if He allows evil, it is so that we will see it, we will know it, and we will abhor it so that a greater good may come. He does not desire for us to suffer, but when we ignore what He teaches, when we open ourselves to paths of evil, we should not be surprised what comes for it is we who have chosen the consequences. Still, His love for us is such that though we open our hearts to sin, His hand of love remains extended to us to pull us from the darkness.

Even those who followed as His disciples, struggled to comprehend all which happened before them. Their experience of the world caused them to question, though He rose and came to break bread with them after the third day. The prophecies were fulfilled through Him, but they wondered how this all could be, despite all He told and taught.

If our desire is truth, then, we must seek a relationship with the Holy Spirit, the advocate He sent to guide us and remind us of what He taught. We cannot hope to comprehend all which He has to tell us if we do not spend time in prayer with Him. The more we know Him, the more we experience Him, the more difficult we make it for the evil one to deceive us.

May the peace and blessings of the Lord be with you always,
Prayer Soldier
