Pentecost is celebrated fifty days after Easter Sunday. It also falls on the tenth day after Ascension Thursday. Pentecost is referred to as the festival which celebrates the birth of the Christian Church as God sent the power of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and disciples of Jesus to prophesy the gospel. Pentecost is described in the scripture of the Acts of the Apostles. It describes how the Holy Spirit descended upon the followers of Jesus.
“\'It will come to pass in the last days,\' God says, \'that I will pour out a portion of my spirit upon all flesh. Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams. Indeed, upon my servants and my handmaids I will pour out a portion of my spirit in those days, and they shall prophesy. And I will work wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below: blood, fire, and a cloud of smoke. The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the coming of the great and splendid day of the Lord, and it shall be that everyone shall be saved who calls on the name of the Lord.\'” Acts 2:17-21
Some Christian denomination refer to the day as “Whitsunday” or “White Sunday.” This comes from the custom of baptizing converts to the Christian faith on the Sunday associated with the feast day of Pentecost. The association with white comes from the practice of wearing white baptismal garments by newly baptized catechumens.
The Sundays surrounding Pentecost are traditional days for many churches to celebrate the sacrament of Confirmation. The ceremony is often conducted with a laying on of hands and anointing as an act of bestowing the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Catholics believe the sacrament is reflected in the scripture of Acts:
“Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent them Peter and John, who went down and prayed for them, that they might receive the holy Spirit, for it had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them and they received the holy Spirit.” Acts 8:14-17
