Therefore the Lord himself will give you this sign: the virgin shall be with child, and bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14)

What would be the true salvation of the House of David, a king who could raise great armies and fight great battles, or a Savior who would forgive the sins of the soul and light the path to eternal life? The oppression in this world is unjust and much suffering follows the result of deceit and corruption. Kings, emperors, dictators and heads of state lead nations, but to what ends, to what memory, to what legacy?

The persecuted must be defended; in the face of aggressors, blessed are the peace keepers who defend the innocent; in the face of devastation, blessed are those who care for the poor; but what army will defend the matters of the eternal soul?

Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the holy Spirit.” ( Matthew 1:18 )

The child of the virgin did not come to conquer men, but to teach us how to conquer the one who threatens the soul. The Redeemer did not come to raise armies of destruction, but armies of salvation. He would call upon the sinner to become the faithful. He would forgive the sinner that would repent. He would anoint apostles to spread the good news of the saving Word.

Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God, which he promised previously through his prophets in the holy scriptures, the gospel about his Son, descended from David according to the flesh, but established as Son of God in power according to the spirit of holiness through resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him we have received the grace of apostleship, to bring about the obedience of faith, for the sake of his name, among all the Gentiles, among whom are you also, who are called to belong to Jesus Christ; to all the beloved of God in Rome, called to be holy. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 1:1-7)

Through His only begotten Son, God would send His gift of peace and love to the world. The words of the prophets would be fulfilled, the Word would become flesh so that whosoever would believe might be saved from darkness and led to the light. He would appoint His apostles and through the generations the Word of salvation would be spread; from the hills of Jerusalem to the far reaches of the world, the good news of the Lord is before us.

As we prepare to celebrate the birth of our Lord, let us reflect in prayer upon the mercy of God. Let us pray in thanks and praise for the greatest of gifts, a child born of a virgin in the City of David, Bethlehem.

May the Lord be with you always,
Prayer Soldier
