What Are We To Become?
Scripture:
Thus said the Lord God: I myself will take of the marrow of the high cedar, and will set it: I will crop off a tender twig from the top of the branches thereof, and I will plant it on a mountain high and eminent. On the high mountains of Israel will I plant it, and it shall shoot forth into branches, and shall bear fruit, and it shall become a great cedar: and all birds shall dwell under it, and every fowl shall make its nest under the shadow of the branches thereof. And all the trees of the country shall know that I the Lord have brought down the high tree, and exalted the low tree: and have dried up the green tree, and have caused the dry tree to flourish. I the Lord have spoken and have done it. (Ezekiel 17:22-24)
Therefore having always confidence, knowing that, while we are in the body, we are absent from the Lord. (For we walk by faith, and not by sight.) But we are confident, and have a good will to be absent rather from the body, and to be present with the Lord. And therefore we labor, whether absent or present, to please him. For we must all be manifested before the judgment seat of Christ, that every one may receive the proper things of the body, according as he has done, whether it be good or evil. (2 Corinthians 5:6-10)
And he said: So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the earth, and should sleep, and rise, night and day, and the seed should spring, and grow up while he knows not. For the earth of itself brings forth fruit, first the blade, then the ear, afterwards the full corn in the ear. And when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he puts in the sickle, because the harvest is come. And he said: To what shall we liken the kingdom of God? or to what parable shall we compare it?
It is as a grain of mustard seed: which when it is sown in the earth, is less than all the seeds that are in the earth: And when it is sown, it grows up, and becomes greater than all herbs, and shoots out great branches, so that the birds of the air may dwell under the shadow thereof. And with many such parables, he spoke to them the word, according as they were able to hear. And without parable he did not speak unto them; but apart, he explained all things to his disciples. (Mark 4:26-34)
Reflection:
A question we might ask of ourselves is what are we to become? As children, we go to school to prepare for some form of career, profession or vocation. We learn, and sometimes we have some dream or goal, but we are also sometimes confused as to what we want to be as our future approaches. As years pass, we will achieve some goals, some shall fall to the way side and new ones shall come our way, but the question remains, what shall we do tomorrow, what shall become of us?
The day will eventually arrive where the next day in this world shall not come. Whatever we desired to be can no longer be molded, our race will have come to an end. The question we will face, then, is what have we done? We may have answered the question as it pertains to our desires and perhaps on our path we sought to live by His Word, but did we ever think to ask Him, Dear Lord, what do You desire of me?
We have the opportunity from our youth to ask of Him: Dear Lord, help me see what You want me to do, what You want me to become. Perhaps we do not ask because we are distracted by the world, or maybe we are afraid that we will be burdened by what He asks of us or that we will fail in what He might have us do.
If we ask Him, no matter where we stand today, what He desires from us in the morrow, we should also have faith that He will guide us on the way. If our heart is open to Him, if we turn our talents to Him, He will bring us to the day where we shall hear: Well done, my good and faithful servant.
Our days are always filled with choices. For each choice, there is a consequence; some good, some bad. His Word is there from which to help us choose the path through which our talents may yield blessings to those who surround us. If we choose to travel our journey without Him, our path will wander and others shall fall victim to our mistakes as we try to discover what is right and wrong. Our hearts shall become hard. Tempted to judgment and hate as a means to elevate our own esteem, we only spread darkness and bring darkness within ourselves. As words spew from us, we cut others down, offering no hand of love, no forgiveness. We are tempted to believe our sins are few and do not see just how much more we need His mercy over those whom we judge. We do not see the day which is coming where we shall be held to account for what we have learned, what we have done and what we have failed to do.
If we ask Him to guide us on our journey, and our heart remains open to listen to His desires for us, we shall bless those who cross our path. We shall bring light to those who surround us and shall share joy with those who spend some moments with us. If we allow love and not judgment to flow through our words, we will help build hearts rather than tear them down.
He has created within each of us talents. Some we see, but some may be hidden to our awareness, waiting for us to discover and nurture them. We have the choice as to the purpose to which we put them or to put them to no purpose at all. If we ask Him to guide us, we shall see the glory of His work through us. If we wander without Him, we may never know our true potential.
He measures us different than those within the world. The measure of what we do does not come from our wealth or positions we attain, but the purpose to which we put what He gives us. We are not all called to be leaders of nations, but we are all called to be leaders of hearts. We may not build great empires, but for each heart in which we help build love, the heavens shall rejoice.
For some, the journey is long, for others it is short. The question we might ask, no matter the length of the journey, is what joy of love did we leave in our wake? If we have allowed Him to guide us, we will be able to look back upon a most blessed path.
May the peace and blessings of the Lord be with you always,
Prayer Soldier
