Losing his beloved parents and brother early in life, he lived through Nazi and Communist occupation to become the first Polish pope in history. Largely responsible for Communism's collapse in 1990, Pope John Paul was a champion for peace and human dignity in his numerous trips around the world. Crediting Our Lady of Fatima for his miraculous survival of a 1981 assassination attempt, the Holy Father brought the message of Divine Mercy to all people and called all Christians to confidently proclaim in word and deed Jesus Christ and His Gospel.
