"What profit is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose or forfeit himself? Blessed Charles de Foucauld, while in Nazareth, carved into a piece of wood these words from the gospel and hung them over the door of his shack, to see every day. Perhaps they are words we might write down and place somewhere easy for sight and for pondering each day of Lent. They are among the most likely of Jesus' challenges to offer the shock of religious recognition, that sudden contact with eternal truth, in this case the truth that we take into the next life only what we have given away in this life. And indeed is there anything worth pursuing with passion or possessiveness in our lives without seeking at the same time faithfulness to God's will? The answer is of course nothing. Let us be generous in almsgiving and sacrifice during this Lent out of love for Christ. We will receive even now what lasts into eternity - a loving union of our soul with God.
Reflection based on Luke 9:22-25
