In What Do We Place Our Faith?

Scripture:

For that night was known before by our fathers, that assuredly knowing what oaths they had trusted to, they might be of better courage. So your people received the salvation of the just, and destruction of the unjust. For as you did punish the adversaries: so you did also encourage and glorify us. For the just children of good men were offering sacrifice secretly, and they unanimously ordered a law of justice: that the just should receive both good and evil alike, singing now the praises of the fathers. (Wisdom 18:6-9)

Now, faith is the substance of things to be hoped for, the evidence of things that appear not. For by this the ancients obtained a testimony.

By faith he that is called Abraham obeyed to go out into a place which he was to receive for an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing whither he went. By faith he abode in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in cottages, with Isaac and Jacob, the co-heirs of the same promise. For he looked for a city that has foundations: whose builder and maker is God. By faith also Sara herself, being barren, received strength to conceive seed, even past the time of age: because she believed that he was faithful who had promised, For which cause there sprung even from one (and him as good as dead) as the stars of heaven in multitude and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable. All these died according to faith, not having received the promises but beholding them afar off and saluting them and confessing that they are pilgrims and strangers on the earth. For they that say these things do signify that they seek a country. And truly, if they had been mindful of that from whence they came out, they had doubtless, time to return. But now they desire a better, that is to say, a heavenly country. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he has prepared for them a city. By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, (To whom it was said: In Isaac shall your seed be called:) Accounting that God is able to raise up even from the dead. Whereupon also he received him for a parable.
(Hebrews 11:8-19)

Fear not, little flock, for it has pleased your Father to give you a kingdom. Sell what you possess and give alms. Make to yourselves bags which grow not old, a treasure in heaven which fails not: where no thief approaches, nor moth corrupts. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Let your loins be girt and lamps burning in your hands. And you yourselves like to men who wait for their lord, when he shall return from the wedding; that when he comes and knocks, they may open to him immediately. Blessed are those servants whom the Lord, when he comes, shall find watching. Amen I say to you that he will gird himself and make them sit down to meat and passing will minister unto them. And if he shall come in the second watch or come in the third watch and find them so, blessed are those servants. But this know you, that if the householder did know at what hour the thief would come, he would surely watch and would not suffer his house to be broken open. Be you then also ready: for at what hour you think not the Son of man will come.

And Peter said to him: Lord, do you speak this parable to us, or likewise to all? And the Lord said: Who thinks you is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord sets over his family, to give them their measure of wheat in due season? Blessed is that servant whom, when his lord shall come, he shall find so doing. Verily I say to you, he will set him over all that he possesses. But if that servant shall say in his heart: My Lord is long a coming; and shall begin to strike the men-servants and maid-servants, and to eat and to drink and be drunk: The lord of that servant will come in the day that he hopes not, and at the hour that he knows not: and shall separate him and shall appoint him his portion with unbelievers. And that servant, who knew the will of his lord and prepared not himself and did not according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. But he that knew not and did things worthy of stripes shall be beaten with few stripes. And unto whomsoever much is given, of him much shall be required: and to whom they have committed much, of him they will demand the more.
( Luke 12:32-48 )

Reflection:

In what do we place our faith? Those who do not believe in Him place their faith in the world and what comes from the world. They place their faith in a moment of fleeting time. They place their faith in the belief there is no purpose beyond the moment of what limited life we have in the world. They place their faith in the belief that whatever they do to survive is just and that there is no consequence to sin other than the strength of one person over another. They place their faith in the belief that evil has no guide and the weak have no savior. They place their faith in the belief that whatever morality exists comes from the reasoning of the moment. They place their faith in the belief there is no salvation and no hope beyond the trials of the world.

Those with faith in God look beyond the world, for they know that whatever tribulations they experience are allowed for a greater good and that whatever test they face will come to an end in the confines of this world. They place their faith in the belief that the only end which truly matters is the one which leads to the new beginning with Him. Their worship, then, is not for the fleeting things of this world, but only for their Creator and their Savior.

The faithful find little justice in the ways of the world, for the evils of the world lead the children of His creation to conflict, misery and oppression. Tyrants are spawned and the innocent suffer through the arrogance of the powerful. Leaders who do not keep the Word of God in their hearts fall to corruption and the twisted words and lies of those who seek to manipulate them. They do not comprehend the test of love He granted to us through His Word to which such words of deceitful ones may be tested to reveal the evil which hides behind them.

The faithful seek to study His Word so that they comprehend the love which is within it and the love which is called forth from anyone who seeks to follow it. Through His Word, they find the eternal justice of His grace, His mercy, and His love. Anyone who attempts to use His Word for their own purpose and greed shall eventually be revealed for they lack the love within them which yields the truth, the light and the way. The faithful who fill themselves with the love of the Holy Spirit will understand. The faithful who fill themselves with the love of the Holy Spirit will know the truth. The faithful who fill themselves with the love of the Holy Spirit will see the way to which He guides us.

The Lord holds sorrow in His heart for the children of His creation who turn from Him, who spurn Him, who mock Him, who place their faith in ways of evil over the clear paths of His love. The Lord holds sorrow in His heart for the children of His creation who follow the misguided, but forgiveness may still be theirs because of His mercy and the great love He holds for every child of His creation.

The Lord rejoices for each soul who seeks the blessings of His Word. The Lord rejoices for each soul who seek Him in faith. The Lord rejoices for every soul which turns to His light. The Lord rejoices for every soul which asks for His love to fill their heart. The Lord rejoices, for each soul who turns to Him shall give love and shall know love. For each soul which reaches out to share in love, He has prepared a special place within His house so that they will forever live within the comfort of His peace and love.

Leaders, whether it is conferred to them through position or wealth, face the greatest test. To them is entrusted not just what they possess, but the souls of those who they lead. Should a leader fall to corruption and seek to lead through manipulation or oppression, they shall be held to greater account than those who were deceived or forced into submission. Those who abuse their power shall be held to account for every soul which suffers. Those who use their power to turn souls from Him shall be judged by Him and will receive the weight of agony for what they have done and what they have failed to do.

The leaders, though, who seek to be guided by Him and seek to lead others to His Word shall also be judged and will receive the measure of His blessing well beyond the love they have brought forth and the love they have brought forth from others. It will not be easy for anyone who steps into a position of leadership, for evil will surround them and evil will strike at them. Evil will seek to corrupt them. The strength of their own will not be enough to withstand the onslaught of the world. The question will come to their heart, who then, can stand against the world? In these moments of trial and tribulation their faith will sustain them. Through prayer, they may ask for His strength to fill their heart and His wisdom to guide them in what they may do so that His will may be done.

And what of those who follow the leaders of the world; what responsibility befalls the follower? They cannot hide in the shadows and point to another as responsible for them. They cannot be held blameless for what they have done to follow for they must know they too shall be judged for what is in their heart as they walk their steps. Followers must remember they have the test of love from which to evaluate what is told to them or what is demanded of them. Should they see a leader falter, they must question what is happening with love. Through prayer, they must seek for the light and the truth to be revealed and that a just and faithful leader be returned to them. Through prayer, followers must ask for their leaders to be protected from evil. Through prayer, followers must ask that their leaders are strengthened to reject evil and the ways in which it corrupts. But if a leader fails to turn away from evil, the follower must turn away to liberate the oppressed and seek the path of love and justice. To replace oppression with oppression is evil, for the Creator of truth, love, charity, peace and justice is still not served.

And if a leader should falter, followers must be prepared to gather together in love. Through prayer and love, followers are called to support one another. Those who follow must also be prepared to lead one another through the blessings of love, just as He leads us through the love of His sacrifice and His forgiveness of those who do not know what they do. The followers left without a leader must pray that another shall be granted to them; one who is also granted strength against the temptations of evil. All who follow must pray, for it is through prayer which He shall reveal the truth and guide those with an open heart to Him. All who follow must pray, for it is through prayer He will reveal the just and faithful leader.

May the peace and blessings of the Lord be with you always,
Prayer Soldier
