Do we understand that which we have in our faith? Do we understand that to keep or grow what we have requires our attention, lest it dwindle and be swept away from us?
Any relationship requires attention. Whether it is a mother, father, daughter son, brother or sister; love withers without work. Love taken for granted, love not expressed, shall wither and die.
Can a plant grow if it is not watered? If it is not placed in fertile soil, can it flourish? And so it is with our faith. If all we profess is that we believe, have we placed our faith in fertile soil? If all we do is attend in the house of our Lord but once a week, have we given it sufficient water?
In what environment (soil) do we place our faith? What sustenance (water) do we give our faith? Do we place our faith in the soil where we may do the will of the Lord, where we may perform works in His glory, where we may perform acts for those less fortunate in His name, where we may reach out to those poor in spirit that they may be drawn near to His Love – that their faith may grow? Do we water our faith with study of the word, by sharing the word that we all may grow and flourish in His light, by attending worship with others that we may express our faith as a flowing, beautiful garden? Do we water our faith with prayer so that we feel Him, understand Him, that we prepare ourselves to become ever closer to Him?
Dear Lord, help me to place my faith in the fertile soil that will allow it to flourish. Help me to express my faith in communion with others so that many may see what can be accomplished in Your name for our good and the good of all Your Church. Dear Lord, help me to water my faith with the study of Your word, the sharing of Your word so that it may guide me and grow in others. Dear Lord, help me in my prayer that I do not let matters of the world keep me from these moments where I lift my thought and words up to You. And in these moments and at all times, help me to hear Your voice. Help me to understand Your purpose, Your will, that my life may step into your glory.
Amen.
