Many blessings to all,
Can we imagine how Joseph accepted the news that his betrothed was found with child though he had no relations with her? We do not know the range of emotions he may have felt, but we are told that unwilling to expose Mary to shame, Joseph sought to divorce her quietly. It is perhaps unlikely that he would have thought as to the possibility that his betrothed would be the one to fulfill the prophesy, “Therefore the Lord himself will give you this sign: the virgin shall be with child, and bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel.” Isaiah 7:14.
But then the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:20
Suddenly, in that vision, all was changed for Joseph. He could have denied the dream, rationalized it away, but instead, he took Mary in his home as his wife. We can only ponder what Joseph may have thought about his responsibility to care for and protect this woman who was with child through the holy Spirit. As all was revealed to him, the life of Joseph was suddenly changed.
In one moment Joseph was pondering his betrothal, in the next he was pondering divorce, but after a dream that could not be denied, he fulfilled the will of God to become the protector and provider for the woman who would give birth to the child they would call Emmanuel, which means “God is with us.”
