But Jesus summoned them and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and the great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave. Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many." ( Matthew 20:25-28 )
Leaders hold positions through which others may be educated, enabled, encouraged and motivated to achieve beyond what they would ordinarily do on their own. Leaders may also be corrupted to neglect, bully, oppress, abuse or enslave. Positions of leadership may be used for the blessings of those who are led, or or for the selfishness of the one who seeks position and perceptions of power.
Jesus taught His disciples a form of leadership to which they were not accustomed. They saw leaders as sitting in positions of honor, prestige, or power; but Jesus taught that the greatest of leaders serve those whom they lead and give of themselves selflessly. The example of Jesus was to become the ransom for all His faithful. He came not only to educate, enable, encourage and motivate, but also to become the food and drink of eternal life ( John 6:48-58 ).
Blessed are those who are led by Him and lead others to Him, for by His sacrifice, they shall live forever with Him.
