"I, the LORD, have spoken; and I will surely do this to this entire wicked community that conspired against me: here in the wilderness they shall come to their end and there they will die." (Numbers 14:35)
As we look at our world today, we might ask, what punishment awaits for the wickedness which surrounds us? What will the Lord do with such a world that continues to turn away from Him? What will He do with those who sin and struggle with sin? We might also ask, with the wickedness of people and governments, when might we see the chastising hand of God? Do not our people and nations already exhibit wickedness worse than that of Sodom and Gomorrah who were "proud, sated with food, complacent in prosperity" and who failed to help the poor and needy (Ezekiel 16:49-50)? Do governments and nations not turn away from Him with greater arrogance than those whom He left to wander the desert? Why then, do we not see His hand raised against the wicked? Why do they seem to grow in their arrogance and dominate our lives?
Perhaps the answer is found in the answer of God to Abraham when Abraham sought to intercede for Sodom. Abraham asked if the Lord would really sweep away the righteous with the wicked and the Lord responded that He would relent for the sake of the righteous (Genesis 18:16-32). It is perhaps because of His faithful He allows the world to continue, for in those who follow Him and keep His commandments to love, there is hope.
Still, we must be concerned, for if the world continues in its direction, we must ask, where will we be when He gathers the remnant of those who believe in Him so that He may hold the wicked to account? Where does our own sin place us? With whom will we be counted?
Through His only begotten Son, we see His grace, mercy and desire to forgive. If we take the hand of Jesus, He will guide us away from our wickedness. If we take the hand of Jesus, we will be guided away from our sin so that we might be gathered among those who will be brought to His kingdom. The choice as to whether we take His hand, though, He has left to us.
Blessed are those who are guided by His hand, for they shall be led to the blessings of His love.
