Wonders
Whether it is snow covered mountains, trees glistening with frost, majestic waterfalls, deep blue skies, billowing clouds, leaves changing in the fall, the warmth of a spring breeze, or a big full moon rising over the horizon, I find daily that God presents me with breathtaking wonders. Light and darkness are part of the contrasts of the earth. During the night I see stars and the glow of the moon. During the day I see the art of the clouds in the skies; drawn and redrawn by the swirling of the winds.
With all the beauty that surrounds me, can I not be in awe of God’s design? Daily, I often take for granted the splendor that is spread about me, but then, there are just days I cannot help but raise a prayer in thanks to God for the wonders He has created.
Biologists, geologists, chemists, anthropologists, botanists, scientists of every type study the world daily and try to unravel the mysteries so abundant in God’s universe. They study things large and small and cannot help but be amazed at the intricacies, complexities, and wonderful simplicity of all that we call nature.
With everything that man has attempted to create, there is nothing that we have built that can compare with the magnificence with which God surrounds us. Is it any wonder that artists have devoted so much time and canvas in the effort to capture the images of God’s design?
Mankind has built grand buildings and complex machines, but nothing mankind has done can compare to the sculpture of grand mountain ranges, forests, or desert dunes. Nothing can compare to the wonders of biological design.
God has given me the intellect that spurs curiosity, the desire to understand all that is about me in the universe. By myself, I cannot hope to study and understand all that I see. With all the minds and intellect of the world; with all the sharing of knowledge; with all that has been studied, cataloged, and written; mankind has barely scratched the surface of our understanding of God’s creation.
It is part of man’s nature to study and attempt to understand, but is mankind too arrogant in what we believe is the span of our knowledge? Whether it is the expanse of the cosmos or the depths of the sea, there is so much that exists beyond our limited intellect. There are many scientists that study God’s universe with the simple objective of understanding more about the creation that exists about them – yet, there are those who look at the same body of knowledge as proof against the existence of our Creator.
The rational is that the laws of nature explain everything. The theory is that everything around us exists simply through the chances of nature. Whether we believe that random events or the design of God is the reason for our existence, one must consider that both explanations require faith.
Should I not consider that God created all the laws of nature, all that science attempts to explain? Should I not consider that God creates through the forces He has created? Should I not consider that God molds with all the power of the winds and rains? And what of all the structures built by man? Is it possible that the work of men is one more of God’s tools?
“There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.” (1 Corinthians 12:4-6)
As I draw in a crisp breath of cold winter air or feel the warmth of the summer morning’s sun, I experience the world about me. Through each sense God has given me, I am in touch with His universe, and yet, there is so much that is beyond my observation. How could I possibly view all the expanses of the universe and have faith there is no God behind its design?
“By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. (Hebrews 11:3)
