Many blessings to all,
From the time the angel of the Lord came to Mary to share that God had found favor with her and had chosen her to be the mother of His son, she had months to think about what was to come. As the child was born and events began to unfold in fulfillment of many prophesies, can we imagine the thoughts which may have filled her?
Through the generations we have been told only a few moments of what Mary lived, we are told only a little about her thoughts and the emotions that filled her. We are told that in response to the angel, Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Luke 1:38
We learn a little more when Mary visits Elizabeth. Mary said to Elizabeth, “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior. For he has looked upon the lowliness of his handmaid; behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed. The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy is from age to age to those who fear him. He has shown might with his arm, dispersed the arrogant of mind and heart. He has thrown down the rulers from their thrones but lifted up the lowly. The hungry he has filled with good things; the rich he has sent away empty. He has helped Israel his servant, remembering his mercy, according to his promise to our fathers, to Abraham and to his descendants forever.” Luke 1:46-55
Mary knew she was blessed, she knew something wondrous was to come from the fruit of her womb, but did she know the entire plan of God? We are told that as the events of the birth of her child began to unfold, “Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart.” (Luke 2:19) Can we imagine what that reflection might be and all the thoughts that would follow through the youth of this child? Did her Son tell her of the events to unfold?
Did she fully understand at that time that from her womb would be born the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father? Did she understand that for us men and for our salvation, he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he was born of her to became man? Did she know that for our sake He would be crucified under Pontius Pilate; that He would suffer, die, and would be buried? Did she know that on the third day He would rise again in fulfillment of the Scriptures; that He would ascend into heaven and would be seated at the right hand of the Father?
Perhaps it is just an academic question to ponder the thoughts of Mary, to wonder what she felt when she held the child of God in her arms. The real question, though, is for each of us. Can we imagine what we would do if we were to be visited by the angel of the Lord, if we were asked to perform a portion of the plan of God? We might dismiss the thought as something too fantastic or something of generations past; for what great event could possibly be asked of us in this day?
The Lord may not send His angel to announce what He asks of us, but the call of God is there none the less. We are all called to live according to the word of God. We may not know what will come of it, but when we respond to the call of God, the impact is not upon our soul alone. When we respond to the call of God, we impact all around us.
May the Lord be with you,
Prayer Soldier
